We liked the proximity of the village of Soto de Cangas to Cangas de Onis which is a pleasant, attractive town, easy to access by car. You can also walk into Cangas along the river and this is 2 - 3 miles. Taxis are reasonable. Soto de Cangas is quite near to the pilgrimage site of Covadonga with its beautiful cathedral, caves and access to beautiful mountain lakes and walks. There are a few restaurants in Soto de Cangas but it is only a fairly small place and we didn't see any shops although there are plenty in Cangas de Onis.
It’s an easy five minute drive from Cangas de Onis where the action is. However there are some good restaurants in Soto de Cangas and it’s on the way to Cavadonga. Also, you can catch the bus to the lakes from there, so it’s convenient.
We were passing on a motorcycle holiday and were pleased with our stay. The hostel is very remote at the top of a very steep hairpin climb and the views are beautiful. We got there very wet and were assisted by the host to get everything dry for our onward journey. Our host was excellent and the food and rooms were very acceptable.
Soto de Cangas is really just an area on the main road between Cangas de Onis and Covadonga with some hotels/b&bs, apartments and a few places to eat (not many). Ideally placed for getting to Cangas, the coast, Covadonga and Arenas for Poncebos (Cares gorge). Oviedo (worth a visit) about an hour away.
This is a great region so very close to snow capped peaks and magnificent countryside just a short drive away. We just got unlucky with the accommodation - no noise barrier from the guests staying above us and a dog close to the property that barked for hours !!!
Please ignore my previous review (Nov 10) for Hotel Rural El Molino because I started to review another hotel near UNESCO site Las Medulas and posted before realizing my mistake. Booking-dot-com IT staff can’t seem to delete the first posting. Sorry for any misunderstandings. This is my corrected review for this hotel. We chose this hotel to be close to the Viladonga shrine. Arriving at the shrine early in the morning means finding a parking place and avoiding crowds. Excellent hub for exploring the Picos de Europa national park. Our room had a bathtub – rather rare in Spain’s hotels. Nice for a hot soak after a day of hiking. Elevator is a plus. Hotel is easy to find, good signs on the highway. Helpful, attentive staff. Breakfast is included in the large, attractive dining room overlooking a river. Lovely view with mist in the trees. “El Molino” must have been an old mill a century or more ago. (Hint: giant millstone in front of the hotel). Huge buffet features various pastries, cakes, (canned) pineapple slices, fresh fruits, yogurts, beverages, cereal. Watch out for a packet that looks like hot chocolate. You will be surprised to find chocolate pudding in your cup!
Everything else. The room was lovely. The staff was helpful and kind. We'll come back for sure.
