Au Le Sleeping is minutes from the train station and center of Boulogne sur Mer. Each room in this family-run hotel has satellite TV, tea and coffee and a private shower. The room was clean and tidy, beds comfy, bar was reasonable, barman spoke English, which helped all round. Breakfast was good, proprietor present, courteous, and spoke French slowly so I could translate. FRENCH BAR CUSTOMERS WERE FRIENDLY WHEN WE ARRIVED AND SHOOK HANDS. Bar prices reasonable. It is two star but very good two star and handy for the motorway and the town centre with outside on street parking. Nothing to fear!

Hotel De La Matelote is located in the heart of Boulogne-sur-Mer, right on the sea front and opposite the fishing port. Nausicaá National Sea Center is a 3-minute drive away. Tony was an exceptional staff member. He made check-in simple. Since we spoke little French, he said he was available to assist. Reserved Parking was great. All the staff was friendly. Hours after the breakfast, the hostess gave us a smile and a wink. The hotel was historic and very attractive. The room was deluxe. We were provided robes, slippers and special edible treats! Sadly, we did not use the spa facilities. It was a peaceful nights sleep.

The fortified town and the Opale coast worth the detour. If you are travelling to the Channel tunnel, take the coastal road to Calais. You will not regret it. The coast is magnificently beautiful and there are plenty of spots with easy access to the beach and free car parking. If you have the time for a short walk on the beach you may even see the English coast on a clear day.
There are wonderful modern apartments now in the centre of town, and parking is fairly easy and cheap. There is a very wide choice of restaurants, bars and cafes to suit all tastes and budgets. The golden sand beaches start by the harbour and go for miles up the coast. You can take a walk along the cliffs to the next very pretty town called Wimereux. You also discover the amazing old walled town on the hill. Don't miss this, because it's really fantastic now it has been renovated. Walk all round on top of the ancient walls first, then choose a great place for lunch, dinner or drinks. Finally, if you have time, there is also Europe's best aquarium close to the harbour.
Lovely town with lots of flowers and nice restaurants and shops. The Old Town is adorable. The remparts are a must-see. The fish market is nice to visit, but you find better prices in het fish shops in the town. The beach is fine, but if you want you can visit other beaches close to Boulogne-sur-mer. We will definitely come back!
It’s been nearly 10 years since we last visited- we used to go 2/3 times a year but latterly the town appeared threatening and decaying. We were pleasantly surprised at how vibrant the town and the old town were with most shops and restaurants occupied. Had a great break in the old town and enjoyed the facilities. The new Le Bar was a great addition. We’ll be back soon.
It was February so beach was not applicable but is easy to access with parking close by and would be good on warmer days. Plenty of cafes etc to choose along sea front. Nausicaa, the huge aquarium and part of the reason for the trip, was very good, very well presented with text in French and English throughout. The old walled town of Boulogne is typically French, narrow cobbled streets with plenty of bars etc. Walking around the walls provides a great view over the wider area and only takes about 15 minutes. Recommended.
Staying next to the old walled town with its cobbled streets was perfectly located. easy walking for castle, cathedral, food, market, and flea market (when on), and numerous restaurants. We ate in Le Swan, which had good friendly service, and good food. Nearby, and easy walking is the British and Commonwealth war cemetery.
Location was excellent ...overlooking the beach and easy walking distance to all center activities. Staff was helpful and friendly.
