Very short stay, but it seems like a very interesting old town in the centre (ignore the spreading rather industrial suburbs) full of half timbered buildings, cathedral, plenty of restaurants and cafés, very lively without being overwhelming.
Non-existent customer service. Extremely poor restaurant meal, with no apology or offer to a substtitue dish . Extremely disappointing anniversary meal. Staff demonstrate a very pretentious / arrogant attitude. This establishment is best avoided!
Just a short stop off on the way to the slopes, which wasn’t nearly long enough to have a proper look around the town. It’s a very pretty town with lots of nice restaurants and shops about. Will definitely need to call back for a better look around and a little longer stay. I stayed at “La Maison De Marie Caroline” which was lovely for my bed and breakfast. I had dinner at a restaurant called “Ferdinand” in the centre of town, which again was fantastic.
Easy to find off the motorway, loved the house & a big plus was the swimming pool, although we visited the weekend after xmas. In the summer it would be a plus. Wonderful owner bridget was a delight. Nothing was too much trouble.
Châlons-en-Champagne should not be visited in winter months (was November - maybe Christmas would be OK though). Almost everything was closed during our stay. As if no tourist would be coming over at all. We were also appalled by the quality of the restaurants. Not one was even close to being decent. We trusted online scoring (google - TripAdvisor) to choose which one to go to. In the end we were even prepared to take the whole family to Michelin rated restaurants and pay the price if it weren't that only 3 are mentioned and always fully booked (I wonder why). Maybe the summer is nice in this town and maybe the Christmas feel would also be good but in my view the town feels dilapidated with the myriad of empty houses and shops. The area is nice and interesting, the town far less (again in month of November)
Medieval through post war buildings, circus school, parks that were once private gardens, beautiful cathedral with strikingly modern WW1 memorial statue. Canal system started by Louis XII plus the river made for an interesting work. Basic info available in English from tourist office which helps interpret what you see. Very pretty houses, rather scruffy train station. Main bridge had been around for some time when the French blew it up during WWII to stop the Germans who rebuilt it only to blow it up in turn to slow the Americans.
