A few miles from the Belgian border, Lille displays Flemish influence in both architecture and cuisine. Its most famous square - Grand Place - is home to the beautiful Vielle Borse building, the Lille Christmas markets and several restaurants serving moules-frites and local beer.
Behind that is the Palais Rihour, a rather odd-looking building surrounded by cafes. In the opposite direction is another square with the opera house at the centre and triangular-shaped buildings fanning off in 3 directions. One of these cobbled streets leads to the Old Town, where boutiques and international brands are in beautifully crafted shops.
Shopping in Lille is actually epic. It has Europe’s largest bookstore (the 8-floor Furet du Nord) and largest flea market - the Braderie de Lille. Then there is the bustling Wazemmes market and the huge Euralille shopping centre. The town also has some fantastic chocolate shops.
Other attractions include the Musée des Beaux-Arts and the Citadelle – a 17th-century fortress surrounded by a free zoo and gardens.
Lesquin Airport is on the city’s outskirts, but most visitors arrive at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport, named after Lille’s most famous son. If travelling to Lille by Eurostar, check out the mural of famous European landmarks before heading to your Booking.com hotel, B&B or apartment.

Lilles is a lovely place with beautiful architecture, parks, large avenues, a wide offering of places to eat - including regional food, vegan options, and a lot more.
Because of the large number of students, the place is very lively.
Public transportation is convenient - but walking is still my recommendation to enjoy the architecture and the friendly atmosphere

Lille is a very attractive city, the centre is very easy to walk about in. There are some attractions a little out of the centre, we may go back some time to visit them. Best thing we did was spend €5 at the tourist office on a book with self guided walking tours.
Make sure you have a 'Welsh' to eat at some point - beer soaked bread, cheese and mustard with chips.
Loads of places to eat and drink.

Lille is a pleasant mix of Flanders and France.
Lille is a pleasant mix of Flanders and France. For the experienced hiker, most of it is within walking distance. Despite the vacancy, the Old City is worth a visit. There are endless dining options, often quite cheap.
The Citadel of Lille is also worth a visit. It is located in a beautiful park with lots of greenery. You cannot visit the citadel itself, but you can walk around it completely. The Zoo at the citadel was closed for maintenance (07/2024).
There are also many shopping opportunities, such as in the modern shopping center at Lille Europe station.
An absolute downside are the many beggars, some of whom come quite aggressively asking for money.

Lille, France, boasts charming Flemish architecture at Grand...
Lille, France, boasts charming Flemish architecture at Grand Place, impressive art at Palais des Beaux-Arts, and the quaint Vieux Lille. Visit the Citadel for historic walks and Wazemmes market for local flavor. Beware of crowded areas; the zoo is less impressive than other attractions.
Tips:
- Use public transport; Lille has an efficient metro and bus system.
- Try local specialties like mussels and fries (moules-frites) and the regional beer.
- Beware of pickpockets in crowded areas.
- Visit in spring or early fall to enjoy pleasant weather and avoid the busiest times.
Overall, Lille offers a delightful mix of culture, history, and modern amenities, making it a great destination for travelers.

Lille has glorious squares, and a fabulous townscape reflecting the architectural glory of times past. It also has a more modern sector that held considerably less charm, with lots of graffiti and litter. On Tuesday all the museums are closed.
Although the rooms are a bit small in size it all fits into the expectations you'd have from a boutique hotel.
Very friendly staff, all spoke better English than we did French and to be honest that goes for most of the establishments in Lille.
Wonderful location, right in the centre of old Lille with a large parking garage nearby. (200 m walk)
Never knew Lille was such a pretty city, what a pleasure to walk around.
The staff, including the cleaners, were friendly. They kindly answered about our requests. The hotel is located next to Lille Flandres station, yet close to the city centre, so the location is excellent for train travelers. The building is old, but the room was nicely maintained. No surprises when you expect a no-nonsense hotel for one night.
