A French and Flemish Chocolate Box
A few miles from the Belgian border, Lille displays Flemish influence in both architecture and cuisine. Its most famous square - Grand Place - is home to the beautiful Vielle Borse building, the Lille Christmas markets and several restaurants serving moules-frites and local beer.
Behind that is the Palais Rihour, a rather odd-looking building surrounded by cafes. In the opposite direction is another square with the opera house at the center and triangular-shaped buildings fanning off in 3 directions. One of these cobbled streets leads to the Old Town, where boutiques and international brands are in beautifully crafted shops.
Shopping in Lille is actually epic. It has Europe’s largest bookstore (the 8-floor Furet du Nord) and largest flea market - the Braderie de Lille. Then there is the bustling Wazemmes market and the huge Euralille shopping center. The town also has some fantastic chocolate shops.
Other attractions include the Musée des Beaux-Arts and the Citadelle – a 17th-century fortress surrounded by a free zoo and gardens.
Lesquin Airport is on the city’s outskirts, but most visitors arrive at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport, named after Lille’s most famous son. If traveling to Lille by Eurostar, check out the mural of famous European landmarks before heading to your Booking.com hotel, B&B or apartment.

It was raining for a couple of the three days I was there but even so there are things to do inside. In the sun the park is big and I spent a lot of time there on the first day and it's really easy to walk around Lille I did the City Tour by coach provided by the tourist office and although I had walked a lot of the route it does give you a different view of Lille. The Palais des Beaux-Arts is a wonderful building housing paintings and sculptures. If you like art you can spend quite a few hours here and it has a cafe. The city has some very nice architecture. We felt like it wasn't very family orientated and noticed that there were few other families with small children in the tourist strip. We ended up in a tourist trap for dinner. Had the impression that the traditional food options weren't authentic. Felt safe. Lille has a very good integrated transport system so it was not necessary to use the car at all. One and two day passes for example, are available to buy at machines in any metro station and are excellent value for money. We used the buses, the Metro and the Navette to investigate Old Lille, We really loved a restaurant called Les Deux Rives in Wazemmes. Exquisite food at super prices. Turn right out of the metro at Wazemmes on Rue d'Iena, number 49. A warm welcome, no pretensions but be warned soft drinks only.
