One of the most visited places in France and rightly so. Try to pick your dates slightly out of season if you can as 1.5 million visitors come to this little town. The Chateau has amazing views, not for those who have a problem with height though. Wonder around the old town and visit the Sanctuary. This was an exceptional hotel in a lovely medieval town. Everyone at the hotel and restaurant was friendly, helpful and efficient. It is now one of my favorite spots and we will definitely be returning. Keep in mind it is in a small town in a mountainous region. Many of the roads are narrow with hairpin turns. There were times we thought we were lost along the way. The location is gorgeous and the property is impressive. The grounds are beautifully kept and so are the facilities. The friendly, chatty manager is very helpful and very willing to offer suggestions for a memorable stay. We were fortunate to receive an unexpected upgrade into a very spacious and elegant suite! If you plan to walk to/from Rocamadour, expect to take 11-14,000 steps that day! We did not use the city elevators but chose to walk everywhere … lots of stone stairs! There’s a prescribed circular walking route. Suggest you decide ahead whether you want to take the sloping paved drive down to the bottom of town and the very long sets of stone steps back up OR the other way around. If you have mobility problems, there’s a cute (ticketed) tourist train you can use instead. Our dinner out was at a local farm restaurant featuring all sorts of grilled meat and fish within a walk of the hotel; we highly recommend it but forgot the name so ask the manager. Rocamadour is pleasant but really just a tourist spot. The shrine is nice but not really special (unless you are a pilgrim!) and the town is just full of not very good restaurants and shops selling tourist nonsense.
