Lower Froyle (Near Alton)
Around 6 miles from Farnham, The Anchor Inn in Lower Froyle is a traditional country pub and restaurant in an beautiful waterside setting. Luxurious rooms and suites have free Wi-Fi and parking. To my untrained eye it had an air of authenticity - the beams were exposed, rough hewn and, I can attest, below head height in places. The food was magnificent - the staff had an air (I repeat myself) of rustic charm - they were engaging without being intrusive and to me a lack of high street sophistication which added to their appeal. We were lodged in the Siegfried Sassoon room. I had by chance read a few days earlier Siegfried's poem "the General" : ‘Good-morning; good-morning!’ the General said When we met him last week on our way to the line. Now the soldiers he smiled at are most of ’em dead, And we’re cursing his staff for incompetent swine. ‘He’s a cheery old card,’ grunted Harry to Jack As they slogged up to Arras with rifle and pack. . . . . But he did for them both by his plan of attack.
Bordon (Near Alton)
Set in Bordon in the Hampshire region, The Treehouse features a garden. Stylish apartment, in a peaceful out-of-the-way location, overlooking fields. Short countryside walks from the doorstep.
Alton exceeded our expectations, it was clean and very close to the accommodation. We enjoyed our walk into town and on Saturday held a street market. It was very friendly and had coffee shops and cafes with lots of car parking in the town. The steam train was not running as it was out of season, but this definately would be good reason for a return trip.
Very convenient place to stay. Lovely village atmosphere with lots of places to eat. If coming by car Alton is within easy reach of Portsmouth and Winchester. Surrounding area is beautiful countryside with some attractions on the doorstep. Suggest a trip to Alresford for thatched cottages and streams & lovely afternoon tea with china cups etc. There is a little steam train on the Watercress Line from Alton too that would appeal to children and enthusiasts
Pleasant but nondescript Hampshire town, clearly with its best days behind it. No real sites, lots of empty shops and a dearth of interesting places to eat or drink. However we enjoyed the morning market and just strolling around the charming high street and nearby roads. Good location for Jane Austin fans with Chawton village and Chawton House just down the road and of course the Watercress line for train nerds.
I know Alton well, so it was somewhat of a pleasant homecoming. The town itself is a modest market town with some good independent shops, pubs and eateries. It is a very friendly plsce. There ars some surprising gems, like the Curtis Museum, the Maltings cultural venue and the Railway Arms pub.
Great freshly cooked breakfast. Unimpressed with hospitality of the evening staff. Receptionist needs to learn about customer care, and not tell customers that she is too busy to return telephone calls.
Alton is close to lots of local attractions in particular the Mid Hants railway line. There are plenty of places to stay including the excellent two hoots campsite. There is also a plethora of restaurants. I recommend the Yew Tree Inn, Swan Hotel and the Hinton arms.
Overall Was a good hotel, we only used it for 2 hours in between wedding and reception at the near by venue. But cant comment much as didnt use other facilities or WiFi. But beds were very soft so jot good for sleeping and toilet was smelling bit. Out room's main light wasn't working. But lamp was working so didn't make fuss as we were there for only couple of hours. But price wise bit expensive though
Alton
Dog friendly (very!). Staff couldn’t be more helpful. The Landlady went an extra mile to get us a table to watch the Euro 2020 finals even though the pub was fully booked. What a lovely touch. We visited Goodwood (Festival of Speed). This hotel was only 40 minutes away (ideal proximity). Great value for money. We would definitely come back for our next Goodwood adventure.
Excellent staff. I was checked in by Stephanie and although I arrived very late, she was incredibly helpful in accommodating me at hotel. Room was clean and couldn’t have asked for more from the staff or the hotel. Special thanks to Stephanie.
The check in was straightforward, choice of breakfast items was very good and the staff were very pleasant. The bed, was comfortable and the location of the hotel was ideal.
