The food was excellent and the bed and bath exceptional. The staff was attentive and very helpful with our special needs as we had to stay most of our checkout day waiting for a rental car. The public areas were numerous, spacious and comfortable and all with a fantastic view of Appleby-In-Westmorland in the land below.

You come to Appleby either because you rocked up on the Settle-Carlisle line, or because you did one of the excellent local hikes: High Cup Nick, being the one with The Best View in England. Or because you have a thing for the annual horse fair. We were there for High Cup Nick.

We have been visiting Appleby for 5 years to meet up for the wkend with approx., 12 friends from College from 50 years ago when we had a field centre in Murton. We travel from near and far to meet at the Tufton Hotel for evening meals. Some stay at the Tufton, rent a cottage or camp. On Saturday most climb to top of Murton Pike and back our oldest ex student being 81 years old. There is plenty for us to see and do while we have a catch up. Mostly the ladies, enjoy the clothes, gift and charity shops and plants on sale from grocery and plant stall on Saturday. While the men enjoy the wine tasting at the Tufton, beer, fishing and Pickneys Emporium. We also discovered and had a very fascinating and informative discussion on a visit to the Art Shop with the owner in the Alchemy workshop.

We stayed in Appleby because it was close to the venue of a wedding we were attending. The town is pleasant enough but you couldn’t spend a long time there. It lacks a choice decent eating places and nice coffee shops in our opinion. We did have a lovely meal in The Royal Oak pub though. The local people are friendly and helpful.

If you like a more sedate place to visit Appleby is recommended. Very picturesque high street (Boroughgate) and a Norman Castle at the summit which is well worth a visit (pre-book online). Ascend the fully intact keep to get some great views of the surrounding area and the castle courtyard.

Explore the whole village, as it is ancient (1079 ad). Castle located at the top of the hill. Lots of quirky, quaint houses. Picturesque old train station (steam train). Free overnight parking at the leisure centre - Need a parking disc (buy at CO-OP or Spar shop) to park for 2 hour free in the village or you "WILL" get a parking ticket. Local pubs & shops were all pet friendly.

For travellers on the A66 between England and Scotland, this recently renovated village inn, just off the A66, offers a welcome change from standard chain hotels. Managed by an enthusiastic young couple, with a friendly and helpful staff, this inn is the focal point for the local community. Excellent home cooked food and a welcoming atmosphere are important elements in this success. For guests, the bedrooms, although smallish, have been comfortably furnished and well-equipped, as are the en-suite bathrooms - ours having a good-sized shower.

Charming ancient inn, particularly welcoming to dogs. Our room had direct access to an enclosed garden, and there is a lovely walk through the village to a peaceful spot on the River Eden below the historic Appleby Castle. Great service, with a smile, even when we arrived after closing-time (as a courtesy, always phone ahead with ETA as there is no night reception desk). We wished we’d arrived in time for dinner or a pint in the cosy tap-room. Hearty Cumberland breakfast, and even a menu for dogs. Would definitely stay again.

Fabulous location and beautiful surroundings just tired run down and everyone has just given up on it. Staff in dining room were lovely … reception dark dingy and unhelpful except for one lovely young chap . Poor cleaning staff were overworked and underwhelmed … facilities were terrible no room service whatsoever and everywhere felt fusty . If you are going to run this property as a hotel you need to spend money doing so … needs a total refurb inside and better lighting . All in all way too expensive for what you get

Amazing breakfast and views and most of all a proper pot of tea and pot of hot water to go with. No trapsing to the tea bar every five mins for a cuppa and a mass of tea bags. Please note all other hotels !
