So Barrow in Furness is a an industrial town and your first view is probably of the submarine sheds. However, there are some absolutely fabulous places within a stones throw of the industrial centre. Furness Abbey is an atmospheric ruin of what was once one of the biggest abbeys in England, Walney Island has one of the best beaches in the UK and a large population of seals. The Coast Road to Ulverston has some spectacular views across Morecambe Bay and is also home to Roy's Ices. There's a good mix of restaurants in Barrow and Izgara is one of my favourites. Good value Turkish food and friendly service but you would need to book.
Didnt see a lot of barrow we were in abbey road then toured the pedestrian bit then drove on to to the island. Its any interesting place would recomend it to anyone.plenty to see at the docks.enjoyed my visit going back in july to see the bits i missed. Ate breakfast and lunch in wetherspoons but had ane exellent evening meal in an italian place called Marios just off abbey road on the pedestrian area .
Lovely place and fast trains to get there comfortably..loved it not congested lovely kind people Amazing place at some point you could make out the blackpool.tower amazing. Recommend but maybe most enjoyable in summer
I was born in Barrow and love coming back as I know all the best beaches and access to the lakes is easy. You also have Furness Abbey which is interesting, lots of great views. People are friendly and local meat and potato pies are lovely. Ulverston is good to visit and Hayes garden centre is great at Ambleside with the best views of the hills from their first floor restaurant.Try a glass of water there, it’s unbelievably fresh having come off the hillside. There are loads of nice places to eat, The Crown at North Scale has a good rating.
Walney Island is a hidden gem. There lovely beaches, two nature reserves (one at each end of the island) and the English Coast Path. There is a good bus service between Barrow and Walney (but this does not run down as far as the South Walney Reserve). I visited out of season (October) so the Piel Island Ferry and seal trips were not available at the time that I stayed (during the week) but I will certainly return during the summer. Furness Abbey is well worth a visit. There is a visitor centre with displays and exhibits and there are lovely walks in the valley. I found that the people in Barrow were really friendly and helpful.
Very interesting area- town/industry/ 1920 housing development for Vickers workers/nature reserves on Whalney island & excellent free museum Easy access to scenic coastal train route
Barrow in Furness
Sympathetically decorated in character of the building, with just a few details left to complete, the interior has been worked on tirelessly by the relatively new owners (trades still hard to find, Covid-19) Once the exterior of this hotel is complete, this personal, warm and cozy hotel, with only 4 rooms, is soon to be a gem of a place. and will stand as a proud individual building ranking easily as one of the best in the area, and one which I will visit again. Well done Victoria House.
I have stayed at a lot of hotels but the customer service here was second to none. My husband forgot to bring his medication therefore we had to go through NHS 111. Hiwever the reception staff were brilliant in helping us. Over and above that the hotel itself is lovely. Spotlessly clean, and good breakfast. The cooked items could have been a bit warmer but everything else was lovely. Location wise it's ideal near town centre. Will be back if down this way again.
The breakfast and evening meals were really nice. The staff were exceptionally nice, especially Debbie on reception. The beds were very comfortable and the bathrooms were spacious. The hotel was cheap which made me suspicious of whether it would be as nice as the photos made it look however it was exactly the same. Despite being at the bottom of the lake district, it was easy to get everywhere that we visited.
Fantastic staff during the evening and in the morning. You don't want for anything, so very helpful. Room was immaculate, best sleep I have had in years. I can't believe some of the comments some people say here, It's Barrow and really quite cheap for what you get. So local and convenient and staff so helpful, good luck to them.
Our room was lovely , very comfortable large bed. We had the executive room. Hotel food was lovely , dinner and breakfast wonderful. Staff were exceptional. Thanks to Roxie on check out this morning as we had to cut short our stay last minute and was very very helpful.
The hotel is located in pleasant countryside just outside Barrow and is equally good as a base for the southern Lake District as it is for Barrow. The staff are welcoming and friendly. We didn't have an evening meal but breakfast was good with quick service.
Barrow in Furness
The cooked breakfast was excellent. This hotel is in a good place for touring the south west area of Cumbria. It is a good 35 minute walk into Barrow but there is a regular bus service that stops right outside the hotel

Stayed in several hotels around the Barrow-in-Furness and the King Alfred hotel several times when on business and this is by far one of the best.

Barrow in Furness
I had never stayed in Barrow before but just wanted something simple and affordable as somewhere to stay on the way up to the Lakes. The check in was really easy, good communication from the owner. The room was decent enough... clean, tidy, heated and decorated nicely. Shower nice and hot with reasonable pressure. There's a decent pub called the Cross Keys about a five minute walk and a couple of food outlets although I didn't really have time to explore the town properly as it was late when I arrive. Would definitely stay again.
The manager, Becca, is helpful, funny and thorough. The position is excellent. We visited the Lakes and Walney Island. Free parking, easy access. The well equipped, stylish room had a comfortable bed, a superb shower and a large TV with Netflix. We hired an electric coolbox. Microwave also available.
Barrow in Furness
tbf nothing it’s just an apartment with extras, you pay for what you get… no views and in the dock yard so ya can imagine it’s not a pretty site
