It was a revisit to friends after being at college there 50 years ago. The Embankment hasn’t changed much but the roads and houses look more upmarket in that area. Went to the athletic stadium for a party and that is a real asset for the town. Didn’t have time to visit the town centre but some nice smaller restaurants and shops on side roads. Bedford is pretty central to visit the local area but the whole road system takes some negotiating.

Bedford is a compact town. It is well sign-posted. The river area is very pleasant with plenty of walks and cycle routes. There are activities for children here. There is a very good food market here twice a week. The shops are not very interesting, but it has good arcades. The Cultural Quarter is good. The Higgins Gallery is superb and free. The Bunyan Museum is small, but welcoming and informative. It is also free. I didn't have time to go anywhere else.

There is a great museum with some surprising artworks for a small (albeit county)town. Also a museum dedicated to John Bunyan which draws visitors from all over the world-it has a Moot Hall just outside the town at Elstow which is beautiful with oak beams & lots of artefacts (& a nearby abbey) The riverside makes a beautiful walk & there are shops & interesting cafes in the town centre. In the market square there is a church & there was a BBC base there during WW2.There are connections to the band leader Glenn Miller who was lost in a plane over the channel when he was on his way to entertain the troops in France.Near the town centre there is a castle mound which is the only remaining part of Bedford Castle-the gardens can be explored & the history discovered.

We need to plan a return visit - the was so much to do but other commitments meant that we only caught glimpses of what the town had to offer. We did enjoy dining at the Nazar Lounge, an original establishment where we were feted with tasty food from friendly, attentive staff. We have to go back - sooner rather than later.

Bedford is a pleasant town with deep history, but not a lot to show for it. The castle is in ruins. I was serendipitously surprised to find the John Bunyan Museum across the street from my hotel. The writer of Pilgrim's Progress, he is perhaps Bedford's most famous citizen, more even than the medieval Lords and Ladies who resided in the castle. The river walk is beautiful. I watching people sculling on the river. Many people commute from Bedford to London for work.

Bedford has a great museum & art collection at The Higgins & just around the corner is the world famous John Bunyan museum.Sadly the High Street is in decline with the recent proliferation of out of town shopping centres, but the river front Embankment,Russell Park & the site of Bedford Castle make for good walks. The town has some nice cafes & pubs & there is a market in the square on Saturdays-mainly fruit & veg & food. There are other stalls outside Boots selling clothes. On the other side of town is the larger Bedford Park, complete with Victorian bandstand & public swimming pool. Bedford has some lovely architecture & interesting old churches & pubs. There is a new cinema on the outskirts of town. For clothes shopping etc Rushden Lakes & Milton Keynes are a short drive away,as are many diverse pretty country village pubs for dinner. There is a large independent book shop in town which is worth a visit.

Was ideal for our purposes. Was a good location being close to the bus station and plenty of shops only a stones throw away. Spot on for a simple no fuss accommodation. Decor was pleasant and practical. Overall a very pleasant experience and should I need to stay in the Bedford area again I wouldn't hesitate to book here again

A superb location on the river, with an impressive dining room overlooking the old bridge and the swans and Georgian riverside buildings. An excellent place to stay after a concert in Bedford Park, only a short walk away.
