Castle Douglas is great if you want to tour the region. Although the town is utilitarian rather than a beauty spot in itself, it is full of character and the Carlingwark Loch and grounds are superb. Its location makes it perfect for travelling to all parts of the Solway Coast, Dumfries, Threave Estate or along the coast to The Machars, and to go inland to the lochs and hills of Galloway Forest Park or just roam around the rolling hillside close by.
Castle Douglas is a lovely little town, people were all friendly, helpful and welcoming. We only went throughout the day as it was a bit far for taxi in the evening From The Inn on the Loch, but that suited us as we had been out and about all day. Definitely recommend a visit to the area there are lots of organised walks around and the area is lovely and quiet.
Castle Douglas is a great base to explore Galloway, a long high street of independent businesses with unique and often hand made goods, just right for a unique gift. There is a loch at the end of the high street and Threave Gardens and Castle close at hand.
Town has individual character with good selection of generally independent shops with a variety of goods including higher quality or craft items. There was an art exhibition on during my stay & there seems to be events in the town or local area - good tourist information centre.
Owner Steve and family were very friendly and helpful. Room with good sized balcony with glass front right on the loch was perfect. Food was excellent by Becks. Loved the log fire and comfy sofas in front of it. I would recommend this location to everyone. Places of interest nearby. Our dog Jo was made very welcome and received cooked sausages. We will definitely be back. Water sports and fishing available too . Can’t fault the Inn on the Loch
Earths Crust Bakery and Sulworth Brewery Tap are well worth a visit (although the latter shuts at 6 daily). There is a very pleasant walk around the loch. There is no night life. Only one restaurant was open and we couldn’t find a pub open in the evening.
