More museums than you can shake a stick at.
More museums than you can shake a stick at. The Keep Museum and the Dorset Museum and Art Gallery stood out for me. The awe inspiring Maiden Castle hill fort was spectacular and a top attraction Hardy’s house and Max Gate were worth visiting even if you know nothing about the man and his work. Finally a walk around the shopping area is a must.

The newly rebuilt Dorchester Museum is a must for Art and local history exhibits, give it a minimum of 2/3 hours. The town is quite small but on Wednesdays the market is worth a look. The Keep Military Museum is also interesting. The short walk around the River Frome path is lovely and there are many longer country walks locally. There are several old churches and Maiden Castle and Maumbury Rings to visit. We recommend a walk around the King's newish Poundbury estate, which had a very good garden centre and several shops, and meals in the Duchess of Cornwall Inn there are excellent.
Parking in the town is difficult but there are local buses and trains.

I loved this town - the people were friendly and the city so pretty. We walked the dog beside the river and went to the Maiden Castle in the morning before our journey. I would have stayed an extra day or three if I had realised how interesting Dorchester was.

Dorchester is amazing, has restaurants, pubs, parks, churches and so many museums. I actually didn't have time to go to everything I wanted to so I would like to go back. There is so much in the nearby area to see too.

Dorchester is a lovely town; don't miss the excellent museum, the roman villa behind the City Hall and below that, the lovely walk along the river. Beyond that Dorset is beautiful from Golden Cap and Lyme Regis to the various glorious churches and historic houses and their gardens. Coney's Castle, an iron age hill fort north of Charmouth, was wonderfully atmospheric and gave superb views. Stourhead to the north has the wonderful gardens and parkland designed by Capability Brown.
We happened to have visited Hardwick Hall in Derbyshire on the way down, and then Montacute Manor (20 mins from Dorchester - take the guided tour if possible) and Lytes Carey Manor 52 mins away in Somerset in that order, giving a wonderful overview of private displays of power and wealth in Tudor England, (from highest to lowest), all three fascinating and with superb gardens, but the last having the most charm.
We were very impressed with our stay and found the staff & facilities met our expectations, to include top marks for the monetary value of our stay. We will certainly stay again at this hotel when we next venture into Dorset. We loved learning about the history of the area and the reason why the hotel is called The Rivers Arms. We wish the owners the very best of fortune with their hotel.
I found the Duchess of Cornwall hotel to be excellent. The room was a good size, well decorated and had a very comfortable bed. Breakfast was good and the staff friendly and professional. I would anyone visiting Dorchester to stay at this hotel.
The room was beautiful one of the best hotels Ivestayed in. Had fantastic cocktails in the bar. Was really central to dorchester.
Breakfast was very nice.
