FAQs about hotels in Durham

Sacred English Heritage

Durham could definitely be one of those towns that appear in fairy tales and stories of kings and knights. Lying on a hilled peninsula formed by the Wear River, the striking cathedral overlooks from the hilltop, surrounded by the castle, palaces and historic buildings. Get transported back in time by the magic of this English jewel, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Though archaeological evidence suggests the area has been inhabited since 2000 BC, the present-day settlement was founded by monks from Lindisfarne in 995, choosing the area as the final resting place of Saint Cuthbert. Symeon of Durham stated once that ‘to see Durham is to see the English Zion, and by doing so one may save oneself a trip to Jerusalem’. Hotels and B&Bs in Durham’s historic centre are a popular choice to enjoy this historic legacy.

Its powerful religious position granted such great honour to the city, that the bishop still holds the rights to a seat in the House of Lords, and to accompany the sovereign at the coronation. During the 19th century and encompassing the industrial revolution, the university was founded, with Durham Castle becoming its first college.

Whether you’re searching for a cottage, a modern hotel, or a cheap hostel, Booking.com offers a wide range of accommodation in the area.

Cathedral and Castle including the exhibitions were great. An active town centre with lots of interesting shops. As a university town it has plenty and varied hospitality outlets. We were only there for two days but will definitely be back.

Durham is a friendly and beautiful city. The cathedral and castle are stand out attractions. There are many attractive walks to take through the cobbled streets and along the river banks. There are also plenty of good restaurants, pubs and tea and coffee shops for those looking for refreshments.

Some in my party complained about the hills - it's hilly!

Some in my party complained about the hills - it's hilly! Enjoy the views that brings! Large pedestrianised areas make walking round the centre shops and alleyways a pleasure. The castle and cathedral peninsular is great for the majestic church and leafy walks by the river, but the castle is student accommodation, not tourist site, so enjoy the sight of it, but usually only from outside. The city has the buzz a student population bring.

Durham is a hidden treasure. The Cathedral is absolutely amazing and the guides are very informative. It is an easy city to walk and has lots to see. The walk along the river is a must do to take in the views of the cathedral from the banks of the River Weir.

Durham is a stunning city with wonderful historical...

Durham is a stunning city with wonderful historical buildings, decent shopping and stunning nature all around and within the city. Walk as much as you can - you will find secret passageways up and down to the cathedral and castle , and serene walks around the meander of the river. There are great places to eat and drink. The botanic gardens and the nearby woods are beautiful. The Cathedral is stunning. Pop into the covered market for unique stalls, including an LGBTQ+ bookshop, and a reasonable cafe on the mezzanine level. A longer walk up the hill will take you to the Oriental Museum, which is a gem. You will also see lots of the university buildings, which might inspire any younger members of your party. The people are generally very friendly and welcoming, despite the odd Reform voter expressing their vaguely veiled racism. If you have time to travel around the area, Durham is a great base to visit the incredible Beamish Museum or Bishop Auckland with its stunning Faith museum, and a lovely Vintage cafe near the excellent Spanish Gallery. Fish and chips on the seafront at Seaham is also a treat.
