Sophisticated Victorian Spa Town
The elegant spa town of Harrogate has some of England’s finest Victorian architecture. Lush greenery and colourful flowers also add to the stately atmosphere.
The main attraction is the Turkish Baths and Health Spa, in a 19th-century building which maintains its original Moorish interior design. Nearby is the Royal Pump Room Museum, set over Europe’s strongest sulphur well and detailing the town’s history.
One ongoing Harrogate institution is Bettys Tea Rooms which serves fabulous afternoon tea. Surrounded by the unique shops of the Montpellier Quarter, it overlooks gardens which continue south to meet The Stray – over 200 acres of parkland whose vibrant spring blossom is quite a sight. On the opposite side of town are the Grade II-listed Valley Gardens, whose bandstand hosts summer concerts. The gardens merge into a pine wood which neighbours the acclaimed RHS Harlow Carr Gardens.
Aside from its visual beauty, the town is also important for conferences. Harrogate International Centre is one of the UK’s top convention venues - just one of the reasons why the accommodation industry here is thriving.
Options on Booking.com include 5-star hotels with spas, cheap apartments near the train station, and guest houses with parking. The nearest airport is Leeds Bradford Airport to the south.

RHS Harlow Carr is my favourite place to visit and the purpose of my trip. I ate at the Old Swan Hotel where I stayed. Pretty easy to get around although there are a lot of one way streets and sometimes it is tricky to drive down some of them due to double parking on each side as the roads can be quite narrow. I would keep to the main roads next time.

Lovely experience. Good night experience, didn't realise so many bars. The Light show was on when we visited lovely addition. Parked the car and went everywhere by bus. Meals at The Ivy - not to be missed!

Harrogate is a beautiful town with so much to see and do, especially for those who enjoy history! There is also a copious amount of eateries from take-outs to fine dining. I had the most amazing Sunday lunch at Threes A Crowd and a very tasty teacake and chai latte at a great hidden gem round the back of Betty's called Love Brownies who make, as the name suggests, the most divine vegan brownies. Don't miss a walk around Valley Gardens, especially once the flowers are in bloom. There are great transport links from Harrogate train station and an excellent bus service if you want to go further afield but don't have a car! The taxi drivers are also very friendly! I need to go back as I didn't have time to see everything!
