Around 6 minutes’ drive from central Kirkcaldy, the Merchant House bed and breakfast in historic harbor town of Dysart is just under 30 miles from both Dundee and Edinburgh. Had a very good time here! :) The landlady was always very kind to me. She was always helpful and even offered some vegetables from her own garden and prepared some amazing dumplings! (Thanks a lot, S!) The house is very cozy and has a beautiful garden. The surroundings are beautiful, with the sea and a huge park very close. As soon as I can, will repeat :)

Fife Coastal Path: Great beach at Ravenscraig, with woodland walk above and great cafe (Harbourmaster) at Dysart. At other end of town, walks towards Seafield and Kinghorn. Seafield is a great place for seal watching. The 2 mile long esplanade in the centre is a bit boring, although the views across the Forth are to die for. Sadly the beautiful old High Street has no obvious regeneration plan and is very down at heel. One or 2 great shops (Wilkies, Waterstones, Grain & Sustain, Eloise) and the shops at the East End. Otherwise a desert. Fabulous Art Gallery near the station with some great Scottish Colourists. Some lovely parks.
Kirkcaldy gets a bad rap sometimes, but it doesn't deserve it. Their are two glorious parks here. Some lovely walks. Okay, the centre of town could do with a lick of paint and their could be more facilities like a leisure centre and a cinema, but its not a bad place to visit. Some really good walks to be had.
If you want to visit Edinburgh or Dundee and don’t want to pay city accommodation prices then Kirkcaldy is ideal, I went to Edinburgh on the train for £10.80 return, plenty of trains , but you can get their by bus or by car but train is way much quicker. Kirkcaldy is also close to Perth , plus you are also close to the lowlands of Scotland. If you visit during April and can visit Europes biggest fun fair , the “links market”
Dysart harbour, old town and coastline were really interesting. Would never knowingly choose to stay in a bail hostel. We were going to a wedding, so did not have time to visit anything other than what we saw on our walk to the harbour and beach . Only saw the station at Kirkcaldy
Town centre seemed very quiet, possibly due to covid, beautiful scenery, central for travelling around the kingdom of Fife. Good train services to the capital, we went to Edinburgh for a day and also to Inverness on Scotrail, very reasonable fares.
Town is a bit run down ,nevertheless a wide choice of shops and nice coast .Weather conditions horrible ,sleet etc so did not see it at its best . Other nicer places nearby Some unusual interesting restaurants but I did not visit any of them as no time
Kirkcaldy
The perfect location for a family tour around SE Scotland: Edinburgh, St Andrews, Dundee, etc. We rented a car, and getting to Edinburgh was really easy--30 min drive to the Gyle shopping mall (free parking), then 20 min by tram--really convenient and relieving any stress. Kircaldy is charming. The hosts are also really nice.
I was made most welcome by the staff, and was undisturbed by any noise from other guests. The hotel was an easy walk from Beveridge Park where I was volunteering at an event, and was within a fairly easy walk into town to reach the shops, cafes, pubs and other facilities, as well as the beach.
The Staff were very good, welcoming on arrival and very helpful. The hotel is being refurbished and looks to be almost finished, it has been done to a high standard and the refurbishment had no impact on our stay. Must also add that when we dined at the hotel the food was outstanding.
