Machynlleth is near the national park snowdonia National Park. I had a good hiking day in the national park which has mountains and river. The city center has a playground which has good views of countryside. There is lots sheep around.
Machynlleth is an ancient town with a lot of history. In some respects it hasn't moved on with the rest of the world and it retains a good deal of its character whereas other towns have just become bland reflections of each other. There are a selection of places to eat and we had no trouble sampling a good number of these. Its small enough to comfortably walk around and has many places to browse. There are also attractions just outside the town and further afield. If transport is a problem then there are rail links to other places of interest although the Pwllheli line going north is quite slow it is one of the most scenic rail journeys in this country. We spent a week here and we didn't cover everything we wanted to see. The weather can be variable but there is usually something to visit if it isn't so good. Highly recommended is Portmeirion (train), Harlech castle (train), The Osprey Project just south of the town (car), walking part or all of the route to the River Severn source from the Hafren Forest Picnic site (car), Shrewsbury (train), Aberystwyth - a day at the seaside (train), walking the town path.
We would have loved to eat in the tiny bistro called 'Number 21', but it was (unsurprisingly, given its reputation, full). So we had dinner in the White Lion, a very friendly pub with good food. The next day, Wednesday, was market day, when the town was bustling. We enjoyed the Museum of Modern Art, where the staff are very friendly – and it's free entry. We had to leave by 11, so felt we hadn't by any means exhausted the town.
Okay we didn’t spend too much time here but I did use the co-op and the young man that served me was very polite and pleasant and as I had no idea what amenities were local to this area he took his time to answer my questions perfect.
First time we stayed in Machynlleth the Hotel could have done with a bit of upgrading but the staff were very helpful and friendly and the food was excellent and plenty of it would I recommend yes 100%
The area we travelled around lived up to all hopes and expectations - a beautiful part of the country. We spent no time looking around the town itself but its position was ideal for the sightseeing we had planned
The welcome was warm and comforting. The staff offered help with my luggage. The suggestion for a beer and offering of a tasting was great. Breakfast was sublime and enormous even though I asked for a small one. Dinner portion was huge too. I found the fish and chips a little underwhelming. Batter was soggy and I found chips greasy.
Machynlleth
The owners of toad hall, louise and Bill were very friendly and welcoming. The place was very bohemian and far removed from a traditional hotel or guest house. It would be an ideal venue for a group of friends to spend the night. A baby grand and drum kit are there to be played.
