A lovely little town, close to the vibrant Edinburgh. There's plenty to do, including a beautiful little racecourse for those that like a day at the races, and it's on the main bus route to both Musselburgh town centre and Edinburgh city centre, so you can leave the car and enjoy the local hospitality... of which there is plenty! The property was next to the bay, where a stroll along the beach was heavenly, morning and evening. We can't wait to stay here again.
Lovely town. Fabulous hotel, restaurant and theatre experience . Ate at Crolla Italian and went to the Brunton Theatre to see Elio Pace, billy Joel songbook which was amazing. Easy getting taxis everywhere .
You need to know Musselburgh but it has some brilliant features, the harbour and beach, the rowing club, the sailing club, the racecourse, the nice walks, the proximity to Edinburgh and some good restaurants and a good traditional bar, the Volunteer Inn (Stags)
I barely saw the town - family duties. But good food at Ravelstone across the street from Harbour Court property. From Harbour Court, if you want to go to/ from Tesco by bus, it’s 2 buses. Lovely harbour in Musselburgh, not at all commercialized.
Only stay at Carberry Castle if you want a truly Castle experience: no heat in your room, no hot water (shower control was broken), tv only had static (front desk said it was bc fireworks outside). At 22h she offered to send a technician to look at our issues but wouldn’t offer a different room or place to take a hot shower after driving all day to get there. The only heat came from the towel rack which turns out was enough since the room was the size of a closet. The fireplace didn’t work, the window heater didn’t get hot. Front desk said the hotel was fully booked but we only saw 12 people at breakfast and it was very quiet for having rooms so close! Didn’t see anyone on our entire wing, but “no rooms available”. And no manager on duty! She sent someone to check the shower and confirmed the water was cold. Why didn’t the cleaning staff know this? Why didn’t the hotel know this? Or did they? Obviously the hotel wasn’t fully booked and there were many other rooms available. Also, the room they had for dinner was an enclosed patio type room that was also freezing. When we arrived I asked to sit by the fire and was told all the tables were reserved. We were seated by the cold rock wall. My daughter ordered a hamburger and it came with charred meat. Was it burned because the meat was old or is that their only heat? Breakfast looked to be about as bad with the “motel 6” look of the continental breakfast table. It was beyond tacky. It was so sad. But they gave us a menu and the traditional Scottish breakfast was actually very good! And the only welcoming person in the hotel was the darling greeter at breakfast. She should be at the front desk instead of the prison guard!
I originally come from Musselburgh so am probably slightly biased but would recommend it to anyone looking to holiday in the area. There's a lot of history in & around Musselburgh & it's proximity to Edinburgh & many other places of interest make it an ideal central point for a tourist holiday. Lots of good places to eat out too.

Exceptional value for the money. The suite was huge and covered two floors with a quaint spiral staircase connecting the two that also provided access to the roof for spectacular views. The bed was very large and extremely comfortable. The suite included a wood burning fireplace to provide an ambiance unexperienced in any other place we stayed. The owners, Sue and Ian were very helpful and informative about the surrounding area and the history of the castle. We would highly recommend the Faside Estate to any traveler, including honeymooners.

The Bothy was very clean, comfortable and very homely. It's perfectly placed for the beaches of both Musselburgh and Portabello, plus it's on the main bus route to Edinburgh. The facilities were superb, with a huge king size bed, big tv, a wonderful shower and a mini fridge, next to a dining table with 2 chairs. Walk 10 yards from the Bothy and you're on the beach, with wonderful views of the bay. We had a lovely stay and were sad to have to leave.... we'll definitely be back!
