Boasting a restaurant, bar, shared lounge and free WiFi, THE DONARD is situated in Newcastle, 1.9 km from Tollymore Forest Park and 3.9 km from Slieve Donard. From the moment we walked through the door we were met with exceptionally friendly hospitality and excellent service. The receptionist was so warm and friendly, as were the ladies who handled breakfast in the morning. They made us feel so welcome. The room was very spacious and the bed was incredibly comfortable and large. We had a fantastic time in Newcastle, and the views from our window onto the Mourne Mountains were breathtaking. Overall, we couldn't have asked for a better stay.

I was only staying one night to visit friends but could see this seaside town at the foot of the mountains has a lot to offer. A very beautiful place that requires more investigating. Also fantastic fish and chips!
My first visit to Newcastle and was pleasantly surprised at how nice and well kept it is. The nearby Mourne Mountains provide a dramatic backdrop to this seaside town. For the energetic the walk up to Slieve Donnard starts from the free car park situated just past the end of the main strip. The nearby long promenade is perfect for those who just want to admire the sea view. The main street runs parallel to the beach and provides a good choice of (coffee) shops and pubs. We had a great evening meal in Quinn's pub so I can recommend that 100% Sun shined for the two days I was there so I got to see it at it's beautiful best
It is a very friendly town and v. easy to get around, there are plenty of v. pleasant eateries in Newcastle. The Mourne Mountains are stunning and the Prom. is beautiful for walking for all ages. The golf course is adjacent to the hotel and is a very renowned golf course. What more can I say except we would ask the Man above to send more reliable weather all the time. My children are all grown up but it is ideal also for families with toddlers and older children to enjoy. A great place.
My husband and I are in our sixties and we found Newcastle peaceful and clean. The restaurant Percy French was amazing. The food was lovely, customer service brilliant and the location spot on. It is just as you turn in for the Slieve Donard Hotel. Percy French is located on the right. The shops were good and each one had sanitizer and adhered to the covid 19 rules. The Promenade is lovely and has lots of seating which I loved as I have fibromyalgia and can't walk for long. There is a play park and toilet facilities which was good too. We intend to come back again in November for a little weekend break.
Definitely a place for doing lots of walking. Weather can change quickly so be prepared. It is easy to navigate on foot or by car. Lots of great eating places like The Harbour Inn or Villa Vinci. Tollymore Forest Park and Castlewellan nearby as are several mountains of varying degrees of difficulty to climb. Silent Valley worth a visit too.
Newcastle itself is beautiful with a long walk along the promenade as you breath in the lovely sea air. It is close to some idyllic places including Sliabh Donard and Tullymore National park which are great for some outdoor adventure. The town itself have some lovely cafes, restaurant and bars. It's a great place to visit for families, couples and groups of friends.

This cottage was one of my favorite places during our recent vacation. Delightful greeting by the hostess. View out the front door was sublime, and the coal fire was perfect for the chilly evenings. Walking distance to shops and food choices. Truly a wonderful experience.
