although Newhaven has a small town centre, it's in between Eastbourne and Brighton. three good pubs nearby. too. The King Edward, the Hope inn and the Ark. the King Edward doesn't do food but it,s a lovely old pub with an old fashioned pub game called Toad in the hole which is fun. never seen it anywhere else before.
The Ark, for a good cup of coffee. Very good service, not enough staff for a saturday morning. Newhaven is not much of a place to visit unless using the ferry to Dieppe. Perhaps we didn't see the good part or perhaps it will be developed in the next ten years.
We didn't spend any time other than overnight at Newhaven but on arrival in the early evening there where kids running around the car park! A bit daunting parking there but it was free parking as it was Saturday evening. There was a little sports bar just in the centre which we were treated very friendly in. We got take away pizza and again treated very friendly and delicious pizza.
John Wayne Lodge is not in Newhaven itself but in Peacehaven which is a kind of suburb at a 2 miles distance. Newhaven is a nice small town. Peacehaven looks a bit boring where not much is going on. The only interesting place is the steep coast.
Very pretty village with a good bus service to the railway station for visiting surrounding areas. Perhaps the only negative point was that at the time we stayed the local pub wasn't serving food but it was only about a 10-15 minute walk to a Brewers Fayre and a short drive to The Ark which was very good.
Newhaven is caught up in traffic as you arrive but there is great pub right down on the coast, the Hope, I think with a good ambience and good food. The main street is fine. There is a yacht marina and a local castle/battlement to visit. I was just passing through for one night on the way to Dieppe .
