FAQs about hotels in Oxford

City of Dreaming Spires

Featuring a magnificent academic heritage, Oxford is a beautiful city where Gothic spires intermingle with medieval colleges. The home to England’s oldest university, most of the 38 unique colleges are sadly only viewable from the outside. Two that you can visit are Magdalen College, considered one of the most beautiful, and Christchurch College whose quadrangle was used in the 1st Harry Potter film. Its cathedral choir also sings evensong.

Other notable colleges are Balliol and Merton, the 2 oldest, while Hertford College has the Bridge of Sighs. Next door is the cavernous Bodleian Library, overlooking the round Radcliffe Camera, the city’s best-known landmark.

The university also has a botanical garden and the best Oxford museums, including the Ashmolean Museum and Natural History Museum, where swifts nest in summer.

Unsurprisingly for a student town, it has lots of bars and restaurants. Oxford shopping is also good and includes England’s oldest covered market, brightly colored High Street shops, and the Clarendon and Westgate shopping centers.

Whether you arrive by road or fly into London Oxford Airport, don’t leave without trying Oxford punting. In contrast to rival Cambridge, you punt here by standing in the front (rather than on the back). Easily accessed from the Oxford accommodations on Booking.com, the routes take in the River Cherwell and the Isis (the name for this part of the Thames).

Driving and parking in Oxford not recommended, but bus services are very regular and there is Park and Ride available. We went for the shopping, good mix of high street stores and more gift/bespoke stores to explore. Lots of places to eat. River Thames makes a lovely walk in dry weather. We didn't have time on this trip to explore the more historic landmarks but will come back another time to do so.

It’s Oxford. What is there not to be in awe of?! There was quite a bit of construction around and that caused some headaches navigating to our hotel. But then you see Oxford Uni and all is forgiven. What a fantastic piece of history and a must see on your London adventure.

Booked a 1.5hr Oxford City and University Walking Tour for 2pm through booking.com with Oxford Walking Tours. We were lucky to have a guide with only 4 travellers, but it could have been a bigger group. Thoroughly recommend this walk with Jonathon where we looked around Balliol college with the walk but also visited a huge bookshop and other locations. We could have stayed in Oxford much longer but enjoyed our relaxing one night stay and will try to visit again.

Nice for short break.

Nice for short break. A university city, so be prepared for some social challenges with a few younger people who are leaning acceptable social norms. A few of the cafe have seriously over inflated prices, rinsing tourists! There is a lot you can do for free and a bit of preparation helps. Park & ride is great.

There is so much green space and you can walk into Oxford along a tributary of the Thames into University Park. The buses are frequent if you prefer public transport, and it is easy to access from the airport and Victoria bus station as well as by train. There is a lot of history to explore with all the colleges (40 or so) and if you like music, many Evensongs to attend. The architecture is very varied. There are good shops and many ethnic restaurants to try.

Very cosy rooms, lovely bathroom and very clean. Fabulous bus links into the city centre that were right outside the hotel and really cheap too. If you don't want to travel to Oxford centre, summertown is up the road with some nice bars and restaurants and cheap parking. Excellent service and very friendly. One of the hostesses remembered my coffee order the next morning and brought it over with a big smile. Would stay again.

Stylish elegant hotel with contemporary decor but retaining its English charm. This hotel is one of the best you will find in England. Understated luxury with friendly service which makes you feel special. In short a gem. Perfectly located in “Old Oxford”
