From prehistory to the present, the very essence of Plymouth has been inextricably linked to the sea. The Pilgrim Fathers departed from here and named their new Massachusetts settlement after it, and Sir Francis Drake famously finished his game of bowls on The Hoe before combatting the Spanish Armada.
Western Europe’s largest naval base – HMNB Devonport – is in its natural harbour, and in The Barbican fishing boats bob up and down by cobbled streets lined with historic buildings. Jacka Bakery here is the oldest in Britain and there are plenty of galleries, bars and restaurants, though Union Street has the best nightlife.
At one end of the street is the Theatre Royal, and from the other ferries depart to France and Spain, passing the Mount Batten peninsula and offshore rocks that once housed Smeaton’s Tower lighthouse, now in Hoe Park next to the Royal Citadel.
Overlooking the park is the Lord Mayor’s residence, once home to Waldorf and Nancy Astor, and other street and building names are reminders of Plymouth’s illustrious connections.
Other attractions include the National Marine Aquarium, the City Museum and Art Gallery and Grade II-listed Saltram House. All are easily reached from Booking.com’s Plymouth accommodation, including luxury hotels with swimming pools, cheap guest houses and country houses with parking.

Plymouth is a small, welcoming city, all areas being very "walkable". I personally particularly love the Barbican area and the independent shops and restaurants, it is very diverse and quaint. The Gin Distillery is definitely worth a visit.
I didn't go into the city centre on this visit, but stayed in the centre on my previous visit, which was good, but a different experience.

The Barbican area was very nice - a good walking area with good views. Lots of history here. Stick to seafood where you eat. A boat tour is always worth it. Walking was easy, but taxis were available also.

Find driving in Plymouth very difficult and stressful, road/lane signs hard to follow but I am a nervous driver when in unfamiliar territory

A lovely little harbourfront with a lot of History, especially for our American Cousins (maybe less so for the Spanish ;-)
Lots of choices of things to do and a great selection of Restaurants etc. We loved the Himalayan Indian restaurant - intimate with great food.
The city centre itself is a little past it's prime, as are many older historic UK seaside Cities.
3 Days is more than enough to get a good take on it.

Plymouth has a lot to offer for all ages/family.
Plymouth has a lot to offer for all ages/family. Our favourite was the Aquarium which has an annual pass for repeat visits. The harbour, town, swing bridge and cycle paths etc all help to Plymouth's attraction.
There is a wide variety for eating out including fine dining. We ate at Miller & Carter Steakhouse one evening and would highly recommend them.
Traffic can be an issue. Parking does seem to be challenging and costly as some paid durations go from 1hr to 3hrs and the charging is 24hrs ie no FOC after 8pm etc.
Every single thing is great. The breakfast is the best breakfast I have ever had in Plymouth. The breakfast room is at the top of the hotel.. Stunning to see the sun up and our table is stunning to see the sea! The staff were all so helpful and happy.
Fabulous locaiton with parking in the city centre of Plymouth - a real find! Very well equipped and extremely comfortable. Ideal for busisness trips, perfect for tourist visits (12m walk to the Hoe), and next to the university.
