Lovely old market town with plenty of pubs and coffee shops for refreshments/meals. Enough local shops to provide for normal holiday needs and situated in a stunningly beautiful part of the country. Ideal for walking/touring in the delightful Elan valley. A G&T/pint in the Eagles, stroll down to the Triangle for a meal, then amble back to the accommodation for a good night's sleep, ahead of a day walking in the Elan valley, is a very pleasant way to spend the evening.
One of the friendliest places in mid-Wales one could ever hope to visit. There are some quaint shops and various things sold in them that you'd expect to find elsewhere, like trouser belts at a hardware store and birdseed at a bookshop. They certainly know how to make shopping interesting in Rhayader. Finding a place to park on the high street isn't as bad as you might expect, which makes getting about by car all the better. There are plenty of pubs, takeaways and restaurants to choose from, but for me, the main attractions were the Red Kite Feeding Station and the Elan Valley Dam. However, I wouldn't recommend a long outdoor visit to either of them in windy winter snow.
We stayed in mid Wales for a weekends mountain biking . Rhayader was a good base as we were able to cycle on both mornings from our accommodation to the trails in the Elan Valley. Rhayder has numerous cafes and pubs, a couple of bike shops and grocery stores to cover all of our needs. We ate in the Lost Arc Cafe and the Triangle Inn which we highly recommend (both establishments within a few minutes walk from our guest house). We found the local people very friendly and welcoming.
I initially gave The Bear a score of 5 out of 10. On reflection I think that was rather unfair and ask you to up this to 7.5 . As i stated in the detailed answer, all facilities with the room were excellent. Our concerns were access for those with mobility issues , especially having to go outside to get to the dining area , bad in wet weather and I was not impressed with VFM on the breakfast but obviously most other reviews score this highly. I is clearly fine for younger and more fit people. Sian is a lovely lady, but because of the issues raised it is unlikely we would stay there again.
Good selection of pubs and places to eat. I arrived early evening and stayed on a Saturday evening and it was busy in the pubs and restaurants, I would recommend booking ahead. I did not have time to look round the town as we left early on Sunday morning.
I was just there for an overnight but Rhyader is a nice little town with some great pubs and restaurants in close vicinity, its well covered with shops in the main street, always a friendly reception at the various pubs. Ive stayed here before and would definitely stay again.
