Brilliant place. Super-friendly people everywhere and a very warm welcome at the Chase Best Western was followed by a delicious meal at Chutneys curry house. The Salt Cellar was great for breakfast and some enticing shopping before a visit to the Brewers pub. Excellent!
Hill-top town with fabulous views across the North Dorset countryside. The vibrant town has plenty of independent shops and some very friendly cafes etc. We were very taken with the Mitre on the High Street, and the Ugly Duckling Cafe in Swan’s Yard. The town is chock-a-block with architecturally fine buildings, and it’s saturated in history. I knew Shaftesbury two or three decades ago, and it’s much livelier and more attractive now.
Shaftesbury is a beautiful place to visit to go for walks in the town and surrounding countryside. It is quiet and relaxing and there are a good selection of coffee shops. Walk down Gold hill and around St James at the bottom of gold hill and come up through Abbey walk, or extend the walk to Enmore green and up the steep steps to castle hill. The Grosvenor Arms is a lovely hotel to stay at or get food, and the Mitre Inn has a good atmosphere for drinks or a pub meal. Nearby SpreadEagle hill is a great walk with amazing views. A short drive away visit Larmar Tree Gardens or Stourhead Estate, or Old Wardour Castle.
The town is really dog friendly most pubs allowed dogs and we were made welcome.Lots of amazing buildings ,gold hill was so unique and loved the park walk for the breath taking views across the valley below . Lots to photograph .Really nice people .
We liked that the room had a new bathroom. But the hot water was not thermostatically controlled thus boiling hot to use, do couldn’t. Shower heat came in waves too. The smell hit us when arrived, early evening, food perhaps but not pleasant. The ambience feels very dated. ( sorry but feels more like a nursing home than hotel). We didn t eat there at all because it didn t present as very pleasant to do so. Food smell, dining room decor dated and dark. Bedroom clean enough. Nice tea etc and biscuits provided and nice towels. And staff were pleasant enough.
Nice town. Lots of independent shops. Gold Hill is a ‘must see’. Recommend the Grovesnor Arms in the middle of the Town for coffee and/or lunch. Nice countryside. Beautiful views from the Town Centre. Good theatre. Watched The Nutcracker, streamed from the Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow.
A lovely place to stay in the heart of the village. We stayed one night in the Queen room with our two dogs.Very spacious room with lovely bathroom. Breakfast was tasty and set us up for the day.. Lovely owners, would definitely return.
Fantastic! Thank you so much. Wonderful kind host, comfy bed we didn’t want to get out of, so clean. Would really recommend.
