Situated in the quaint village of Bramber at the foot of the South Downs, The Best Western Old Tollgate Hotel & Restaurant offers free parking, free Wi-Fi and a traditional carvery restaurant. The hotel is lovely and clean, very good breakfast, beautiful location, very comfortable room and all the staff extremely helpful and welcoming. I would definitely stay there again.
Located in Steyning, 22 mi from Crawley, Uppingham features a shared lounge and free WiFi. Guests at the bed and breakfast can enjoy a Full English/Irish or a vegetarian breakfast. Walking the South Downs Way, day 4 Amberley to Steyning, found this an ideal place to stay overnight. very clean, comfortable beds, and great breakfast, landlady extremely pleasant and helpful.
Springwells House features a seasonal outdoor swimming pool, bar, a shared lounge and garden in Steyning. There is a terrace and guests can make use of free WiFi and free private parking. Lovely room with nice little touches like fresh milk in the fridge, and cookies and sweets. Excellent breakfast choices, served in the garden. The garden and pool areas were a real surprise even if we didn’t stay long enough to take advantage of them. The owners were exceptionally friendly and helpful. We booked at a couple of hours notice when our original booking at another hotel was cancelled due to a Covid infection - our good luck in the end. Highly recommended.
Great village and very picturesque. A few dining places and a good pub but may have to book in current times. Excellent access to Downs way walk and river. 1.5 hours walk to get to coast. Worth a stay for 2-3 days but suggest picking hotels rooms carefully to avoid a road facing room.
There is plenty of history in the area and Steyning itself is a charming old town with many heritage buildings and a good array of shops. Parking is reasonable and we never struggled to find somewhere to park. Despite the weather we enjoyed our time there.
Our room was very small and although it had all facilities it was only suitable as a place to sleep. Spoke to staff about size and was advised that we were in a budget room and to ask for a room in the main hotel another time. I didn't feel the cost for this room was equivalent to a budget hotel elsewhere.
We were staying one night only as we were attending a part at a friend's house that night. The village of Steyning and the close by areas are all "Chocolate box" English Village areas, some parts need a bit of TLC, but mostly very pretty. It would be good to have a car to get around to various parts. We needed a couple more days to investigate the area really, so will be going back at some point.
Lovely old town with lots of charming historic buildings and a nice old church. Good little museum with very helpful staff. Interesting independent shops. Good dinner at Mamma Mia Italian restaurant in the centre of town - very welcoming and friendly staff and nice food. Handy for walking the South Downs Way.
We actually stayed in Bramber, the next village, which has castle ruins and a Norman church. Steyning is a pretty village and the Star is a lovely pub. Just a short car ride to the attractions of Brighton and many inland towns and villages are also within easy reach.
Lovely village excellent location. Friendly staff very clean excellent breakfast
