Surprisingly not an apocalyptic post-industrial wasteland... the football fans and the people generally are some of the friendliest I have met in my travels around the UK. Ended up walking back across the city to my hotel as the taxis were all busy, quite enjoyed it - even heard owls somewhere down by the river. I was in Sunderland for a conference so saw very little of Sunderland. It was a nice surprise to come across a concert for Pride on a break in the conference. I don't know how much there is to do in Sunderland so it might be better to combine it with a trip to Newcastle. Sunderland do have a decent football stadium, though. We come to Sunderland regularly - mainly because of soccer, but also because of the area and the people here - and we used to stay in hotels. We love it here in the northeast! This house is beautiful, cozy, very clean, absolutely centrally located for the city and soccer, but still quiet. And it's not far to the beach either.
