Totnes a lovely town with plenty of coffee and pasty shops.

Totnes a lovely town with plenty of coffee and pasty shops. Interesting buildings with Markets taking place on a regular basis. Only one coffee shop opens at 8 am - thank goodness for that one. Only gripe was WH Smith not open until 9 am. Surely customers who want their early morning paper prefer the shop to be open from 8 am at least - it is a newsagent. To purchase a newspaper to go with the early morning coffee, cannot be done in Totnes.

I like the feel of the town, especially the main street with a great many small independent shops and places to eat, etc. I can easily understand why my friends who have chosen to live in Totnes are very content to be there. There seems to be lot going on, especially for people who are interested in arts & crafts and/or working to save the planet and foster peace and justice in our war-torn world. I enjoyed a couple of walks along the river Dart. And I happened upon the Guildhall, which is well worth a visit. I was interested to learn about the history of Totnes over the centuries. I knew little about the town, except that it was the first Transition Town. My only disappointment was that so many people seem to depend on their own private cars for transport. I imagined how much more pleasant the main street would be, if it were pedestrianized. Delivery vehicles and taxis could be exempted from a traffic ban.

Totnes is an ideal location for exploring the surrounding S.Devon area. Eg. Convenient bus, steam train or ferry travel options to Dartmouth/Kingswear. The town itself is full of independent shops, and has quite a 'laidback vibe'. A variety of pubs/cafes for food and drink, with all preferences catered for.

Plenty to see in this relatively small area.

Plenty to see in this relatively small area. The Devon scenery is lush, soothing and delightful, even in occasional welcome rain showers. Driving around is generally a pleasure; the roads don't seem too crowded even during school holidays. Be careful with route planning however, as Google Maps for example is inclined to send you down unnecessarily long stretches of EXTREMELY narrow lanes flanked by hedges. Locals will often expect you to reverse to the nearest passing place, not such an easy manouevre if you don't practice it regularly!

The town seems to cater more for visitors since I last visited 14 years ago. Unfortunately the castle was closed in mid March but opens on the 23rd. I stayed on Fore St at the King William IV and found there were plenty of shops to browse and places to buy lunch. The market has some great takeaway hot food stalls. We had evening meals in the King Eilliam IV and Rumours both of which I would recommend for no fuss food.

The staff were cheerful and helpful, my single room although on the small side and perhaps a little dated furniture wise was clean, warm and comfortable. The building is situated in a very tranquil country location and does not have the feel of a busy hotel. There was a wide choice of tasty foods for the buffet breakfast which was served in a somewhat Spartan lofty dining hall.
