In the heart of Wincanton, The Dolphin Hotel is just a 20-minute walk from Wincanton Racecourse. The 18th-century inn offers a bar and lounge-diner. Good value. Yummy buffet breakfast with really tasty bacon and eggs. I liked that the downstairs pub was fairly busy but with the windows closed in the bedroom it was soundproof. Lovely welcome tray with custard creams and plants of milk cartons. Soft towels and bedding. Bathroom had been done to a good spec. Looked sparkling. Great value I will return.
Lovely, friendly little place with an amazing view from the top of the hill ! A great base for visits to Longleat And Wincanton Racecourse. Lovely little shops and cafes and a couple of nice pubs plus plenty of country village appeal !
The two best things about Wincanton were, for us, The Nog Inn (good food, delightful staff and a lovely 'beer garden or outside space,) and Hooga Coffee... a wonderful place for delicious breakfasts and probably good food all day. The town is built on hills or one long hill which is difficult for walking if you don't like traversing hills. There is also a lot of traffic as it seems to be a kind of through-town with a very busy junction at the centre where four roads intersect.
We didn't actually visit Wincanton. We had spent the whole day walking at Stourhead and the surrounding area which is absolutely beautiful and well worth a visit. We had taken a picnic but there were sandwiches, snacks, drinks and ice cream available to buy.
The town has probably suffered as a result of the pandemic. There was hardly anything open.An indian restaurant serving takeaway only,no local pub that we saw,a small supermarket and most of the shops were shut. But this was the same in a lot of towns and villages around this area.Such a shame ,as a lovely part of England. The benefit, there was not too many people around.
Beautiful, friendly town. We traveled there for the Discworld Emporium, which was beyond our expectations. Tip: If you're arriving by train into Temple Combe or Castlecary, be sure you make arrangements with a taxi or car service before you arrive OR take the number for a local cabby with you. It's not a far drive at all from either location, but it was a ittle tricky arranging a ride in.
Wincanton was just the right place for us to stay as we were visiting longleat both days we stayed. It’s also easy to get to other areas of interest such as cheddar gorge - wooky hole - Stonehenge among others. We went to the Indian tandoori one night and had an amazing Indian meal. We should have stayed at the dolphin hotel just up the road which was amazing to eat and drink we had an evening meal and breakfast there during our trip. 1000x better than the bear inn where we stayed but wouldn’t reccommend to anyone.
