Although abounding in reminders of the past, York is very much a city for the here and now, with excellent shops, bars and restaurants, many along the River Ouse. Surrounding it are the medieval city walls – the longest and best preserved in England – and many of the gates that once gave access to the city.
Walk the walls for wonderful views of the city and towering York Minster. Standing proud on a hill, this cavernous church is the seat of the Archbishop of York, the 2nd highest position in the Church of England.
A little south is The Shambles, a narrow street with medieval buildings that now house quaint shops. Going further back in time is the Jorvik Centre, a fascinating museum showcasing the city’s Viking remains. You can even try out archaeology for yourself at the DIG excavation pits, with replica finds from York’s Roman, Viking, medieval and Victorian eras.
Other York attractions include the National Railway Museum, home to the Flying Scotsman and Mallard trains. Around a 30-minute drive away, Castle Howard is a stately home on an over 1,000-acre estate.
Leeds-Bradford Airport is the nearest airport, and there's a great range of hotels, B&Bs and guesthouses in York and on the outskirts available on Booking.com.

Whilst the locals tell me they have not done any of these, I would recommend you do! Take a guided tour of the Minster, it is included in your entrance fee and brings the place to life. Take a guided tour of York - I used Shared Walking Tour in York on Tripadvisor, again to get your bearings quickly and find out interesting hidden facts the locals just do not know. Seek out places to eat in advance - there is so much to choose from in York that it is worth doing your homework, I had some lovely meals. I also liked the Merchant Adventurers Hall, the oldest medieval guildhall in the world, open today as a museum and event venue - and there is a café too.

Wonderful city so full of history and although I only live 30 miles away it is one of my favourite destinations and I never tire of visiting - there is always something new to see. The shops and markets are excellent (that last comment came from my wife!)

York has a lot to show visitors. The Minster is a magnificent building,so it
is worth going to an Evensong service. The music from the choir will show
cathedral singing of the highest quality.
There are other features there such as Bettys - where one can feast on a
selection of home made foods of the highest quality.Lunch,or afternoon
tea offers the chance to try bakery of the highest class.
The city is also home to 2 rivers which are incredibly fast flowing if there
has been rain in the hills.
Walking is the easiest way to get to know York, and there are organised
walks to show the city by day or night.
Apartment is as described by Ad - Owner interaction during stay and booking process spot on , very helpful chap - all info to hand - It isn't a brand new apartment , yet its nice and comfy and very clean - Beds are good - the owner goes out of his way to assist - This is a good clean , convenient place to stay in York - Usually come up to York 3-4 times in the year for the horses so i have stayed in a fair few hotels/apartments in the area, from 3 Star to 5 star - Would i stay here again ? - Yes , without hesitation .
I really loved the vibe of the whole hotel, the rooms were really quirky, spacious and decorated elegantly and there was a queen sized bed which was super comfy.
I thought it was a great touch that the curtains were Velcro taped to the edge of the wall so as it became light the room was in total blackout, because of this my toddler slept like a dream and we all managed to get a lie in.
All in all we had a great time here and we’re shocked that it was one of the cheapest places to stay in York at the time of our booking.
The location was great. It was easy to find on arrival with free parking and there was a space available at all times of day. The hotel itself was about a 30/35 min walk into the centre of York and all flat. On the day we had too many bags to carry back we paid £4 for an Uber from the city centre back. You are a 4 min drive to the local retail park and a 9 min drive to the designer outlets. The tv in the room had internet access and it was a smart tv for access to Netflix, YouTube etc and full freeview channels.
The room was very well furnished and clean. The bathroom was also a very good size with a nice large shower. The tea and coffee in the room were replenished and the room was cleaned and beds made and towels changed which was very much appreciated. The staff were also friendly. The hotel was handy for the Jorvik Viking Centre, York Castle Museum, York Minster, Clifford Tower and the Shambles.
Loved staying in this historic, centrally located pub/hotel. Only four rooms you can stay in, so I felt lucky to be able to stay here. It's billed as the most haunted hotel in York, so I thought I was going to be kept awake all night by ghosts -- alas, I slept like a log and no paranormal phenomena (that I'm aware of). Bathroom was surprisingly chic! Breakfast was delicious.
The hotel is in an excellent location for visitors to York, walking distance to various heritage sites. The building itself is very historic, charming and clean, I was upgraded to a junior suite (thank you) which gave a little more space for the 3 night visit. The room was comfortable and well serviced. Breakfast was nice, bar was pleasant and the staff were helpful.
Very nice hotel, well presented, clean and fresh, distinctive style.
Room nicely decorated and finished - again, a lot of style.
Air conditioning in room worked well and came in very useful during what turned out to be a heatwave.
Friendly and helpful staff.
Good location, not far from York city centre and train station.
Wonderful, historic building. Super clean. Lovely staff. Really nice room. Excellent location 5 minute walk to York centre. Warm. Air con in room fully adjustable. Coffee/tea making in room well stocked. Included biscuits. But best thing were the really nice staff. This will now be our York hotel of choice.
room was lovely. it was so spacious couldn’t fault it. bed was comfy, everywhere was really clean and the bathroom was brill. 10 min walk from the centre of York with parking right behind the hotel 2 min walk away. we was even able to access Netflix which was another brilliant touch and it has a fridge!
The hotel is very lovely, everything is decorated well, rooms were clean, an assortment of tea/coffee/hot chocolate in the room. The staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful. We only stayed one night but it was a wonderful stay and I'd definitely stay there again for any time spent in York.
The Churchill Hotel is very comfortable, very central a few minutes walk into York City centre, the staff are very friendly and helpful, the bunker rooms are brilliant, fun, romantic, the food was lovely too. A perfect place to stay when in York.
We are on a self-drive Holiday in England. This apartment comes with free parking.
The apartment is big and clean.
Supermarkets, grocery shops, petrol kiosk and restaurants are close-by. Also within walking distance to York old town.
The hotel was great. It’s only a 15 minute walk into central York. The Twin room was great for my daughter and myself. All the staff made an effort to chat with my daughter, which she loved. Will defiantly be back.
Host Michal was super helpful and friendly. Hotel was a comfortable 10-15 min walking distance to York city centre. Heating was good for a chilly March evening. Housed in a lovely building.
Hotel Indigo is always modern and clean, same for the hotel we stayed in York. Nice staff that answered your needs immediately. Easy to access to the main attractons.
Previously we had stayed at Hampton by Hilton in Bath, which was excellent.
The York hotel had similar facilities and was in a good city centre location.
