Loved staying in this historic, centrally located pub/hotel. Only four rooms you can stay in, so I felt lucky to be able to stay here. It's billed as the most haunted hotel in York, so I thought I was going to be kept awake all night by ghosts -- alas, I slept like a log and no paranormal phenomena (that I'm aware of). Bathroom was surprisingly chic! Breakfast was delicious.

FAQs about hotels in York

England Through the Ages

Although abounding in reminders of the past, York is very much a city for the here and now, with excellent shops, bars and restaurants, many along the River Ouse. Surrounding it are the medieval city walls – the longest and best preserved in England – and many of the gates that once gave access to the city.

Walk the walls for wonderful views of the city and towering York Minster. Standing proud on a hill, this cavernous church is the seat of the Archbishop of York, the 2nd highest position in the Church of England.

A little south is The Shambles, a narrow street with medieval buildings that now house quaint shops. Going further back in time is the Jorvik Centre, a fascinating museum showcasing the city’s Viking remains. You can even try out archaeology for yourself at the DIG excavation pits, with replica finds from York’s Roman, Viking, medieval and Victorian eras.

Other York attractions include the National Railway Museum, home to the Flying Scotsman and Mallard trains. Around a 30-minute drive away, Castle Howard is a stately home on an over 1,000-acre estate.

Leeds-Bradford Airport is the nearest airport, and there's a great range of hotels, B&Bs and guesthouses in York and on the outskirts available on Booking.com.

An an amazing historical city, with all amenities very close to each other. York Minster was awesome, and we loved the History Museum and gardens. The Railway museum and Jorkvic Viking museum are absolutely essential to visit - they were both superb ! The bus service from our hotel to the city was very convenient and pleasant.

The beauty of York Minster and the historic charm of the Shambles is noteworthy as is the tranquility of the riverside walk and peaceful York Museum park. My wife is wheelchair bound and York’s pavements and walkways are very hard to negotiate. Cracked, uneven paving and cobbles with dropped kerbs so poorly engineered as to be unfit for purpose. Pushing a wheelchair in York centre is far from easy. Come on York City Council you can do better than this!

York is great for a short break taking the train to ease the strain. Lots of places to discover history of the area and wonderful ancient walls to walk round and see views of the city. We went to an evensong service at the Minster and appreciated the incredible atmosphere on the third anniversary of King Charles Coronation.

York has a wide range of things to do and see, just walking around the centre offers a lot of variety from the narrow, medieval, shopping streets of the Shambles, to York minster, the Roman walls, Clifford's Tower and more besides. There are plenty of places to stop and eat and drink while you explore.

Lots to do and see though as had visited before we didn't go to the main attractions this time. The ghost bus tour was great ,very unique and funny. Didn't go to Bettys this year but the tea room by the Minster is great for light lunch and cream teas. We love York but the roads are narrow and cobbled in places and you need to be able to walk a bit though shouldn't expect anything other in such a historic city.

Beautiful hotel set in period property..Easy to find with excellent car parking. Check in a little manic as nobody could check in before 3pm,odd when rooms were ready,so long queue for check in a little unnecessary . Bar area and restaurant we're really nice, evening meal and breakfast although good wasn't exceptional. Room was large clean and very nice. Location just a 15 minute stroll into the city centre..Great choice for a couple of nights especially travelling by car. Competivly priced for York.
