England Through the Ages
Although abounding in reminders of the past, York is very much a city for the here and now, with excellent shops, bars and restaurants, many along the River Ouse. Surrounding it are the medieval city walls – the longest and best preserved in England – and many of the gates that once gave access to the city.
Walk the walls for wonderful views of the city and towering York Minster. Standing proud on a hill, this cavernous church is the seat of the Archbishop of York, the 2nd highest position in the Church of England.
A little south is The Shambles, a narrow street with medieval buildings that now house quaint shops. Going further back in time is the Jorvik Centre, a fascinating museum showcasing the city’s Viking remains. You can even try out archaeology for yourself at the DIG excavation pits, with replica finds from York’s Roman, Viking, medieval and Victorian eras.
Other York attractions include the National Railway Museum, home to the Flying Scotsman and Mallard trains. Around a 30-minute drive away, Castle Howard is a stately home on an over 1,000-acre estate.
Leeds-Bradford Airport is the nearest airport, and there's a great range of hotels, B&Bs and guesthouses in York and on the outskirts available on Booking.com.

Please make plans of what you want to see as it is easier to book venues and you can plan your trip and use time wisely. York is a wonderful place for food, drink and variety. This trip I went on my own for the first time after visiting York many years with my husband, Since his death I wasn't sure if I could do this alone but I did and it was wonderful. I have limited mobility and use a stick but there are plenty of areas to sit and rest. York is so easy to get around - if you can get to York by train I suggest you do so as you really don't need a car. You can hop on and off the tour bus- recommended. The taxi drivers in York are so helpful and friendly. All cafe's and restaurants make you welcome and want to help you. I've never been anywhere in York where people are not helpful. I love the place and now I know I can manage alone I will be back very soon. I recommend the Hilton on Tower Road - very central and staff are amazing.Guest review byGwendalotUnited Kingdom - 10.0

Loved the Christmas shop and the bear shop. Fabulous Harry Shop that "can't be named" in the Shambles. York is a pretty city.
York is a pretty city. The main drawcard is The Shambles which is just one street. The York Minster is also good but the entry fee is quite high. York Minster tour was more expensive than we had anticipated...
York Minster tour was more expensive than we had anticipated but it turned out to be really worthwhile. Loved the Shambles but surprised that most of it shut down by 5-6 pm. The Viking Museum was really very interesting and informative. It was my kind of museum with people to explain aspects and a short ride around the exhibition. An outstanding city!
An outstanding city! I cannot understand why we have never visited before, there is so much to see and do. We highly recommend a visit to the “York Dungeon “, it is a phenomenal experience and “the cast” are unbelievable. The Shambles is a magnificent street, so much so, we went three times. Plenty of excellent eateries.
