Matala is a colorful, beautiful, and lively little town with a great atmosphere. It is perfect for beach days and a good starting point for day trips to nearby museums and archaeological sites.
There is a huge selection of good restaurants.
It is a good idea to arrive by car if you want to go on lots of trips and be independent. However, there are also bus connections, e.g. to Heraklion.

Matala is something different and when you there you just fell in love. Of course if you are looking for the crystal clear water, Matala is not the one, even though the surronding landscape is something beautiful. Nights in Matala can't be boring. There is always something to do and have fun. It is defenitley worth a visit.

Matala is one of those places you didn't know you needed to...
Matala is one of those places you didn't know you needed to visit until you go.. and then never want to leave. A long, sandy beach, with beautiful clear water, Matala is big enough to have a wide selection of places to eat & shop and yet not be too big. And in Scala & George's Yard it has two very, VERY good restaurants.

The room was clean and relatively new looking.
The room was clean and relatively new looking. There is no wifi or tv in room. They have wifi at the bar and should be able to get it to rooms with routers but have not bothered. The bed was a disaster, it was hardest bed I have ever tried to sleep on. My wife and I both hardly slept and had sore back in the morning. We have been travelling for over 5 weeks had no problem with any other beds.

There is a great vibe at Matala that differs from the rest...
There is a great vibe at Matala that differs from the rest of Creta. The hippie feel is true. We caught live music the night we were there and it was the best moment.
This along with the red beach - strongly recommend.

A great vibe, a transformational space, a place of fun and light, the staff interact and are extremely helpful, a very close knit family feel, a nice mix of people of all ages from children to grandparents. Many outings ranging from cliff jumping to fire nights on the beach.
Nice music, great pool and various games are played throughout the day. I observed many people extend there stays or leave and return, the best hostel I have ever stayed in, thank you Matala Hostel!

Convenient 5-10 minute walk to Matala town and beach, making amenities easily accessible without the noise. Also because it's just out of the town the night sky stars are stunning. Staff work really hard and do pool drinks service. Our studio was well equipped, you could comfortably live out of it. Matala is nicely sheltered from rhe northerly winds crete can get, with the sea in its cove remaining calm even on windy days.

Beautiful, big and clean room with a nice view, balcony and kitchen corner. Very good quality for money. Free parking in front and walking distance to restaurants and beach. Matala is a must see place. Small and beutiful with nice restaurants facing the see. I did not like the beach though, it was very crowded and the water has big stones and waves.
We arrived after 13:00 and there was no sunbed available.
