We chose Siatista as a stopover on our way from Thessaloniki to the Meteora, and in that respect it was the perfect spot. We were only there one night so explored only the main street and part of the "upper" town (and the church near our accommmodation). Lots of cafes and bars (for such a small-ish place), but we found only 1 restaurant open (it was a Tuesday night though). Still, we had a very nice meal (incl. a very tasty local rosé wine) there, on the "square" in the upper town. The town would be a good base for exploring the area (and maybe if you are en route to Albania, around 40 km away, I think).
This town has very special meaning to me as it was the town my grandmother (Alexandra Stathis Summers) came from. I visited with her and my mother years ago when I was a child, so I was returning to rediscover my roots. The Siatista people are second to none. Everyone knows each other and greets each other on the streets. You are never a stranger in Siatista. They embrace you with immediate kindness and caring. There are many things to see here including wineries, more than 20 churches, hiking, dining and much more. This town has an incredible history with the fur business and connections to the rest of Europe. There are many old mansions that you can see and photograph, museums and more. Don't miss a side trip to nearby Mikrocastro and its beautiful monastery. If you can, visit on/around August 15, when a bid parade from Mikrocastro to Siatista takes place.
