FAQs about hotels in Hvar

Echoes of the Age of Empires

Hvar is the largest city on the Croatian island of the same name within the Adriatic Sea. The wildly undulating coastline formed a natural harbour here, a fact which didn’t go unnoticed by the Venetians, who captured it as part of their empire. The Venetian Fortress sits atop a hill and 13th-century ramparts descend to the old town.

Another castle from Napoleonic times is on a different hill offering beautiful views over red roofs towards the offshore Pakleni islands sheltering the port. Ferries link Hvar to neighbouring Brač and Vis islands, Split and Ancona in Italy.

Given the size of the city, the amount of Hvar accommodation is staggering, and Booking.com offers everything from luxury hotels with pools to cheap guest houses and beachfront apartments. Although most beaches are rocky, their scenic setting and warm turquoise waters are still a draw.

At the heart of the city is the largest square in Dalmatia. Restaurants and bars spill out onto its cobbles, ending at St Stephen’s Cathedral with its see-through belltower. Around the same time the cathedral was going up, one of Europe’s oldest theatres was constructed in the waterfront Arsenal. The Loggia is the only remain of the Governor’s Palace, and the Hvar Heritage Museum helps to put all this in context.

This was the perfect Adriatic vacation.

This was the perfect Adriatic vacation. Best mix of historical sites, sea-side exursions, excellent restaurants, and time to relax as well. Be prepared to walk a lot and have proper footware for walking on the rocky beaches.

    I loved Hvar.

I loved Hvar. Scenery beautiful, great restaurants in the town at the back of the main square, very pretty settings some are expensive to other European travels I've been on. Our favourite restaurants were Black Pepper, Fig, Junior. Would not choose to visit July/August main town can be very busy. Sun beds along the coast can be expensive to hire. Saying this I travelled as a couple In September and we loved Hvar.

Love, love, love Hvar, however, it is tough going if you are not fabulously fit. I am in my mid 60s and swim 3km a week and walk about 5kms a day. My husband has a prosthetic leg. I found the steps challenging, they were almost impossible for my husband. Hindsight.... stay in Split and use the ferry to do a day trip - leave on the early ferry and stay until the last daily ferry. Hvar is seasonal a few restaurants in the back blocks are starting to close for the year. By the end of October we are told 1 restaurant remains open until April. Oh... I should mention is it not a cheap getaway.

Lovely atmosphere and very settled weather. A variety of excursions and walks Swimming is nice but if you like sandy beaches then you need to wear waterproof shoes because the beach is stoney. Food is international but you can find Croatian dishes too.

Hvar is beautiful and has enough to be relaxing, or to have fun and excursions if you want them. The recent sound curfew means it is a great place for those not so keen on being kept up by those partying, but there is a lively atmosphere in Hvar Town. The beaches are all pebbly and public, so open to all. Beach shoes are a must, but there are ample sun loungers to rent and the water is crystal clear. There are loads of restaurants and cafes, and no hassling by them trying to get you in, which was refreshing. There is lots to do, the fort is worth the walk, and there are numerous boat trips to the other beautiful islands, there are water sports and an inflatable aqua park too.

Hvar centre is over priced and if you do not get recommendations where to eat you could end up paying a lot of money for poor quality meals. The island itself is beautiful and worth exploring on your on own. Jelsa would be a much better based than Hvar old town, where a glass of wine is half the price!

Heritage and its hosts were a delight. As we checked in, our beautiful host had everything sorted for us. From early check-in to making sure she recommended the best day and experience for our family, she was on top of it all. Heritage is such a beautiful place, including the Black Pepper restaurant where Masterchef winner chef Ante, had some amazing dishes waiting. Our family had the best time at Hvar, and a big credit goes to the hosts of Heritage Hotel.

The location of the hotel is the main reason we booked and it didn’t disappoint. This hotel is in prime position on the stunning Hvar coastline, with great access to the sea. There is a superb diving centre on site and a beautiful coastline walk into the main town, which only takes about 20 mins. We had an incredible view from our room 307, so did our son in room 209. The staff worked hard and were always courteous and helpful.

everything was great, but I must highlight the awesomeness of the staff. everyone was simply amazing, from the hostess to the cleaning team to the drivers, they were wonderful. The hotel is in a kind of private beach, not in the center of Hvar, but they have a shuttle to go to the center. breakfast was very good and the beds comfortable, but again, the staff made our stay much better than our expectations.

It was the best place we’ve stayed at recently. Everything was very clean. You have everything whatever you need. Also, there are some free parking places nearby. The hotel owners are very friendly and welcoming. We definitely recommend it. It is so close to the center of Hvar and still in a quite place. If we ever come back to Hvar, we’ll be sure to stay here again.

Nice modern hotel, excellent value for money with breakfast included which had lots of variety. Would recommend the pool view rooms. Prices for food and drink are reasonable compared to Hvar town. Staff very friendly and accommodating, we even booked to stay an extra night.
