Built in 1888 and now a protected cultural monument, Hotel Continental is seen by many as the very symbol of the city of Rijeka. The property provides an on-site restaurant and a bar.

It is what it a Grand Hotel but it is dated and could do with refurbishing. The staff are friendly and the rooms were clean. Breakfast was also ok. The location is perfect you can walk anywhere.

Rijeka is a city of art and industry. It has many beautiful old Austro-Hungarian period buildings, which are in dire need of repairs. There are restaurants and galleries that we enjoyed. It is in a close vicinity to Opatija, an old Italian bourgeoise retreat and Krk, the biggest Croatian island. In the back are the mountains of Gorski Kotar, with 1,500 m highest peak (skiing season is open from Nov to Feb). There are many city beaches and secluded valleys in and around the city. We absolutely loved the most beautiful 9 km walk from Volosko to Lovran via Lungo Mare. We also visited Kastav, a small arty community on the outskirts.
All in all, there are so many things to do and see that we advise a good pre-travel preparation.

Rijeka was different to other cities we visited in Croatia.
Rijeka was different to other cities we visited in Croatia. We wish we had more than one night to stay and explore. I really wanted to see inside the National Theatre, but due to our short time frame, it was not open whilst we were there. The theatre has paintings by Gustav Klimt on the ceiling.
The main shopping mall is a fantastic space and never felt overcrowded like so many other places we visited.
Do yourself a favor and allow at least a couple of days to properly explore Rijeka.
Also - do yourself another favor and visit the Aura Distillery Shop in the mall. Beautiful shop with lovely host who was extremely generous with tastings - and there is SO much to taste.

Rijeka is very industrial.
Rijeka is very industrial. Like many places in Croatia, it's been tainted with lots of graffiti which would be better if the local authorities would clean. There is lots of works being carried out in Rijeka with improvements to the road. Watch when you visit if it's outwith summer season as shops are often closed on a Sunday (this is for the whole of Croatia not just Rijeka). But it's a great base to visit Opatija and the islands across from it. The motorway network is amazing. I have visited most of Croatia and there are better places to visit in my opinion.

I like Rijeka and the surrounding areas, especially Opatija, Lovran, etc. it is close to Slovenia, Italy, Zagreb, the capital of Croatia, and has catamarans that go to the northern Adriatic islands. IT has a good vibe, with interesting architecture, a theater, and museums. There is history and there are nearby beaches. It is a good central location from where to explore the surrounding region of Istria, the hills, and the sea.

Rijeka is a picturesque port city in Croatia, located on the Adriatic coast. It is the third-largest city in the country and is well-known for its stunning landscapes, where the sea meets the mountains. The city’s hilly terrain gives it a unique charm.
Mountain landscape is one of Rijeka’s highlights. The mountains are within walking distance, about 30 minutes away from the city center, making them easily accessible for nature lovers and hikers.
Attractions: The city offers numerous historical and cultural landmarks, such as:
• Trsat Castle: A medieval fortress perched on a hilltop, offering breathtaking views of Rijeka and the Adriatic Sea.
• St. Vitus Cathedral: A Baroque church that is one of the city’s key religious sites.
• Korzo: The main pedestrian street filled with cafés, shops, and restaurants, where you can feel the city’s lively atmosphere.
Proximity to the port is another attractive feature of Rijeka. From the port, you can take ferries to nearby islands or simply enjoy a leisurely stroll along the waterfront.
The city blends nature and culture, providing great opportunities for mountain walks and exploring historical sites.

I highly recommend. Zoran and Snježana are wonderful, warm people ♥️ They welcomed us like family, with Croatian beer and sweets for the children 😍, they told us where to go, where to shop and nearby restaurants. At the farewell Snježana surprised us with a nice surprise ♥️ The apartment was perfectly prepared for our arrival, clean and nice - we felt like we were really visiting family 🙂 the area is quiet, there is a wonderful little shop nearby. We will definitely come back more than once 🙂 Thank you ♥️
I was impressed by the cleanliness of the apartment, much more than a 5-star hotel, and the owner's attention to detail. Everything was thought in favor of the tourist to feel very good. A location that I recommend 100% with a parking space in front.
Great value for money. Hotel felt perfectly safe. Amazingly clean and well run. Nice a/c unit in room - a must for Croatia in August! Bed and pillows very comfortable. Will definitely stay again. Staying on a ship was something a bit different!
The hotel was good, a little bit old fashioned but that is the fun...
Our room was comfortable.
The breakfast was nice with variaty of food to choose...
Another good thing is that the hotel was so close to the center!
