Built around two medieval settlements with the Upper Town (Gornji Grad) being its core, the city skilfully combines modern attractions with well-established favourites. Zagreb is nicer than Belgrade, though there is still a lot of graffiti and smelly rubbish everywhere. I don’t think it can decide whether it’s Austrian or communist or eastern European, but it’s pleasant enough in the older parts, quite an open city and easily walkable or trammable and worth a night or two. A walking tour will show some sights otherwise missed if you have limited time. Vibrant restaurant scene in Gornji Grad and some quirky museums.

Zagreb is beautiful and the people are amazing.
Zagreb is beautiful and the people are amazing. It is a small city with lots of history. The Croatian people are all exceptionally kind and helpful. Would have loved to stay another day. Taking a walking tour was a great idea. The tour leader was really informative, and it was a great way of getting to know the city and to understand the basic history.

Zagreb OLD TOWN (where we stayed) is a quaint place. Everything is walking distance.
Having spent time in other 'tourist hot spot' of Croatia, we were happy to see that the Prices at restaurants were far less - even at the best ones.
Great place for at least a 2 day stay!
Excellent, well-maintained boutique hotel, 10 minute walk from the upper town and cathedral. Bathrooms were very new, with beautiful terrazzo bench tops and Rituals toiletries. Breakfast was in a very pleasant setting in a glass atrium in the middle of the courtyard - wide choice of buffet and a la carte items. There was also a little open-air terrace where you could relax after a day of sightseeing. Trams were close by, but without traffic noise. All the staff from the front desk, waiters to housekeeping were friendly and helpful.
