Spirited Kilkenny was Ireland’s capital in the Middle Ages and although many monuments remain from back then, it’s now best known for the 'craic'. Kilkenny cream ale flows in pubs forming part of its legendary nightlife and tours of Smithwick’s showcase Ireland’s oldest operating brewery, on grounds containing the St Francis Abbey ruins.
Kilkenny has the most medieval churches in Ireland. Dating to the 13th-century are the Black Abbey and St Canice’s Cathedral, next to the Round Tower - the only remains of a 9th-century monastery founded by the saint.
Medieval streets, inns and wall remnants still stand, but the most impressive attraction is Kilkenny Castle, in large gardens by the River Nore. The 3-turreted fortress was a former home of the once powerful Butler family.
The Parade leads from here past high street shops to The Tholsel – the porticoed town hall. The Elizabethan merchants’ residence Rothe House is in a similar style. Wandering the colourful streets you can’t fail to notice buildings named after cats, a reference to the residents’ dogged determination. Local hurling team The Cats play at Nowlan Park, and the city hosts the annual Cat Laughs comedy festival, amongst others.
Booking.com’s Kilkenny accommodation includes hotels with spas and pools, and city centre guest houses near the train station.
We will be returning to this beautiful place, we walked around the castle and tower. I want to take a boat ride and would like to take the bus tour through kilkenny and find out about the histroic side. There are many places to eat and drink. Everyone is really friendly and every pub loves a live band. Atmosphe was brilliant.
Kilkenny is a very walkable town. There is plenty to see, including the Kilkenny Castle, the Medieval Mile and the round tower of St. Canice to climb for a beautiful view of the town. The food in town, Marble City, Left Bank, are two of my favorite places to eat.
Have been there many times but never just as a pure tourist. Please, don't just see the castle (which is spectacular and a must see) go and enjoy the river cruise, mile museum and the Rothe house. Top two best places to visit in Ireland.
Great location, perfect mix of shopping and entertainment. We visited a couple of other places on our break but they weren’t as good as Kilkenny. Best restaurant by far Reve Gauche, everything was amazing, best steak I’ve had ever.
Lovely old town with many interesting buildings. Wife found shopping good. Good base for surrounding area. Parking by cathedral 2 euro for day and only short walk from town centre. Some of the cafes a bit dated and looking tired. People friendly and very helpful. Able to get stamps at book shop when post office shut.
History was the focus of our single day there and Kilkenny really delivered. The town is remarkably clean and pedestrian friendly. Breakfast at Foodworks, best pancakes I ever had. Dog owners could be a little more attentive/responsible for their pet’s droppings.
The check in process was simple and plenty of free parking on site. Every employee that I encountered was extremely pleasant. The included breakfast was excellent with the option to order a dish or buffet style. My kids really liked the petting zoo in back of the hotel. It’s a nice touch and not something you see at hotels. Newpark hotel is the perfect place to stay if you’re in Kilkenny.
The hotel was easy to locate and well Identified. It was immaculately clean and the staff were exceptionally helpful, efficient and friendly. The food was excellent and wasn't expensive. Within a short distance of the city centre yet it was perfectly quite.
Very friendly staff and lovely fruit bowl and chocolates in our room for our Wedding anniversary, thank you!! Very comfy beds and great to have parking with the hotel in the centre of Kilkenny.
Beautiful hotel and accommodations. Large spacious rooms and baths. Staff extremely helpful and friendly. Our last few nights in Ireland and a wonderful way to end our trip.
The hotel was beautiful. The staff was great. We loved the pub and outside seating. The location were perfect within walking distance to the Castle and everything!
The staff were very friendly and helpful. The restaurant was lovely. It was in a convenient location and a short walk to city centre.
