Knock is a town that has grown to accommodate the tourists and pilgrims from around the world. Despite that it has a tranquil feel and the Shrine and Basilica are truly peaceful. It is also a great place to stay and tour the local areas - all within an hour or less drive.
Knock is a small place known as the site of an apparition of our Lady in 1879. Most people visit as a pilgrim for spiritual reasons or just to visit out of curiosity. Two or three days can be ok, we stayed for five and made it a good spiritual retreat. It’s about an hour from Galway and you visit other places such as Westport. Shrine-is the main place, small village one Main Street. Most places for eating close early evening. Food basic but expensive compared to glasgow.
Knock shrine is a wonderfully spiritual place where I experienced "Solas" which in our Gaelic language can be defined as Peace, joy, happiness. I went with a friend but you could go on your own. I learned that it is a Marian shrine, and a Eucharistic shrine, which makes it unique in the world. We gained a quantum measure of tranquility and some simple but beneficial time-out from a busy life and I will definitely visit again. The mural on the wall of the Basilica is astounding. The schedules for each days masses, confessions or other events are on a big notice board and I found that there is plenty of most helpful staff about. We had tea and sandwiches on site and there is a hotel 3 min walk from the shrine. We also visited Fr, Payton's Memorial centre, Attymass, about 40km from Knock. An intriguing story of a young Irishman born in 1909, emigrated with his brother to the States at the age of 19 and went on to address almost 26 and a half million people worldwide as an Priest. We got a very informative guided tour, a short film giving an insight into how gifted this man was and who he influenced. The garden and surrounds are picturesque with the Ox mountains as a backdrop. We finished our visit enjoying a cup of tea/coffee with lovely fresh apple tart and ice-cream and an intriguing chat with the staff and another amazing man, Fr. Steve . The staff are really kind and accommodating, It is as rural as it gets up there and well worth a visit. We really enjoyed our trip and spent almost three hours there.
Knock House Hotel is home away from home. It is very warm and comfortable. A writer's Paradise, if you wish to spend some time, to write. Just short walking distance to the Shrine. Nice quiet walks Suitable for Prayer and Reflection.

This is a perfect little B&B right across the road from the shrine. Barbara and Terry offer a lovely welcome to their guests. The fried breakfast is fantastic. The property is clean, modern, simple, elegant. Clearly catholic. As a priest I felt very welcome. I stayed two nights as planned. A guest-couple decided to spend an extra night so much were they enjoying their visit. Great value for money. Thank you Barbara and Terry.

Lovely stay, the staff were absolutely brilliant and the rooms were warm, spacious and had all the facilities you could need. It is only 5 minutes walk from the Basilica so in an ideal location with everything else in Knock being only an extra 5 minutes away. Would definitely look to stay here again if/when we return to Knock.
