Downings had a great ice cream shop.

Downings had a great ice cream shop. We loved shopping at McNutt's where we bought gorgeous wool items and linen napkins. The beach is accessible right in the middle of the village. You can drive onto the beach and park while you swim. The water was so clean and 16 degrees, which was warmer than the sea water off Dublin. The Galley is a great place for lunch. There are lovely little shops to check out.

It’s a great location.

It’s a great location. Eating out there are some lovely places nearby to eat. Pitch and put or football golf are good fun. Can get crowded in the summer holidays. But well worth a visit. The gallery is great for lunch, as is Downings hotel.

there are beautiful beach walks in the area but it takes some driving to get to them. It is a major golfing destination so very good for that. We are not golfers. We had a good time there with good beach walks. It is a remote area. We would have no reason to return.

The perfect base for exploring North Donegal, close enough...

The perfect base for exploring North Donegal, close enough to Glenveagh National Park, Fanad lighthouse (via Harry Blaney Bridge) and Inishowen Peninsula (via ferry from Rathmullan) Ards Forest Park (and Friary) only 20 mins away is well worth a visit, the coastal walk from Friary leads to the most spectacular secluded beaches There are two wonderful beaches, Tra Beag in the town and Tra Mor just outside. Plenty of places to eat with two hotels in the village, plus Fisks for Sea food, The Galley for Gourmet Burgers, Goose and Gander for Pizza, as well as the Singing Pub just outside the village (Steak on the Stone)

The cottage was lovely and had plenty of space for us (adults, 1 child) - in fact there was a whole double room which we didn't even use so would certainly fit larger families. There was a lovely basket of food and drink items on our arrival (some of which we didn't even manage to get through in 3 days!) which was a lovely touch. The cottage is a 4-5 minute drive into Downings and staying in the summer the curtains were very good which given it's light from c5am-11pm made a significant difference!

Lovely secluded area but only a few mins drive to downings. Lovely house with a sauna. Beds extremely comfortable. Host visited in the mornings to check all was ok. Electricity meter in property but we arrived to £8 in the meter and it lasted our entire trip. Open fire which we arrived to already set, it was too warm to light but would be lovely for a winter break. Couldn’t fault it.

Homely, comfortable and friendly with a great freshly cooked breakfast. The rural location adds to the charm. Having access to a very accommodating local taxi driver meant we didn’t have to use the car to get to & from Downings where we were attending family wedding.
