Getting around the place after dark as a single woman traveler is inadvisable, as even though the local folk are very friendly and generous, the lack of streetlights and public transportation can be a bit worrying. Ask for food prices BEFORE you eat, or you may end up paying more. Hire a bicycle for the most convenient experience in getting around. Pack a picnic and lunch by the water every day if you can.
Majuli is the largest river island in the world. It is really wonderful to see the island with all facilities surrounded by Brahmaputra and inside island you can find a branch of Lohit river also. Ferry is really worth watching with all vehicles along with human and at your convenience for business and personal. They follow Vaishnavite culture and you find world's biggest mask making center and pottery section is also worth seeing. They make masks with bamboo and coconut waste with Eco friendly material. Tradition which is preserved is really appreciable.
It is a must-visit place for any self-respecting assamese people, leave alone outsiders. It is a different environment, away from noises and pollution of cities. Majuli is a laid-back place, there are no crowds, no jams, just acres and acres of open spaces. The people are warm and welcoming. A visit to the satras gives a glimpse of the fading assamese cultural heritage. Getting around by own/hired car is the best option as it allowed us to explore so much of the island in the limited time. There are quite a few restaurants/hotels in the town so food isn't a problem. Taking out the map and exploring the island, that's the best way to experience Majuli.
Of the many places I've been to, I can't recall one that has such a peaceful and natural atmosphere. It's a green oasis in comparison to other states of India. I loved it so much, I will definitely return. The only thing it doesn't have is mountains.
