Really interesting city, location for Roman fortified town. Get a museum pass - 4 sites for 8 euros. Frustrated that the museum signs didn't have English translation as standard -all other sites did and it would be appreciated.
Aosta is a beautiful city surrounded by mountains. We walked the city, seeing Roman Ruins and castles. We stumbled upon a fabulous wine and cheese shop and had an amazing lunch at La Ferme Gourmande and fabulous pizza at the Break House. Aosta also has great local wines. The shopping is wonderful, lots of small shops with reasonably priced items. We cannot wait to go back, rent a car, go hiking and tour castles.
Stayed Wednesday Eve until Sunday midday, so 4 nights. I arrived by train from Turin, only about 2 1/5 hours away (depending on train) which had great views. I was staying in the town of Charvensod which is about a 15 min walk from Aosta train station, itself being a sweet little town with a great pizzeria and excellent bar. Aosta was beautiful, surrounded by mountains. Great architecture throughout. Just walking around was entertaining, very foot travel friendly city. Museums and tourists sites apply to the under 26 rule across Europe so as a 23 year old I got free entry to all the sites. Plenty of interesting places to eat and drink, each meal/coffee/gelato was at a different location and not once did I feel unsatisfied or over charged. Weather was great, not too hot most of the time, a cool breeze. There wasn’t an incredible amount of things to do, very much a relaxing break rather than an activity based one but that is why I went. I was solo travelling yet felt safe the whole time, people very friendly and aren’t annoyed when I struggled with the language. Seems like a lot of them spoke Italian, French, and English due to being so close to France. A few times I was welcomed to join a different group at various bar/restaurant which I declined as I enjoy my own company but if you are worried about feeling isolated then there are many locals/other tourists who will be happy to socialise. Wild life is wonderful, lots of birds, interesting bugs, even had a few local cats to cuddle.
Aosta valley is lovely with lots of little villages and castles up the side valleys. The Pila ski resort is great if you like long, wide, smooth red runs. Aosta itself has a nice pedestrianised centre. The Roman remains and the Megalithic site are interesting.
If you love nature and culture Aosta is amazing. El parque nacional gran Paradiso is amazing for hiking (out of Lillac and Cogne) and Aosta is a great base. Cheaper and more authentic than either of these towns.
A beautiful town in the heart of the Italian Alps. Many things to see, museums, churches, castles. The city can be visited in a weekend, but the surrounding valleys offer so much more. Many sports activities, such as hicking, e-bike, rafting, spa, etc...
Everything was incredible with my stay here. Checking into the property was incredibly easy. Location is perfect, right in the heart of Aosta with cafes and restaurants just outside the door, walking distance to the Pila Ski resort cable car, and walking distance to many trails around the area. After a long day of adventuring and exploring I could enjoy coffee on the balcony overlooking the beautiful Christmas lights lining the main walking road. Would absolutely recommend and will try to stay here again if/when I return to Aosta.
Excellent stay. Vecchio Mulino is proudly run by the owners Maria and Domenico. Very gentle, so hospitable. Vecchio Mulino is a warm cute B&B, close to Arco Augusta and the city centre of Aosta, Our room was beautifully decorated. Breakfast is served in a wonderfully decorated underground area. It is very generously and fondly prepared by Maria who makes sure that all is well and fresh. We also highly appreciated free private parking. Grazie Maria & Domenico
The location was not at all what we expected. The "forest" consists of a few trees, you are in the middle of highways and a commercial park. Outside or with open windows you always hear traffic noise and you always will notice the non-idyllic surroundings when you try to sit outside. As the most important feature of the aosta valley is its gorgeous nature we cannot recommend this hotel. We left disappointed.
Great staff and a decent breakfast Location was excellent , 200 metres from the old town with plenty of history, bars, restaurants and shops. Secure underground parking . 5 minutes from the main autoroute to the Monte Bianco tunnel. Ideal stop over for us as we had driven 12 hours from Southern Italy and had a further 10 hour drive the following day.
We loved the room with the garden, with such a nice view. Aosta valley is beautiful and from this hotel you can perfectly explore the surrounded places. Also liked the breakfast outside! Compliments to Elena, she made our stay even nicer with her hospitality, good communication and the tips she gave us. Hope to get back some day!
