Important Port of Saintly Significance
The Apulian capital Bari has been known for its port since Roman times. Nowadays there are 2 harbours: cruise ships and ferries to Greece and Croatia depart from the new port, while the old port shelters fishing vessels.
Between them is a seafront road bordering the real attraction – the old town. Narrow, cobbled streets lead under arches to hidden piazzas with pavement cafes. Many are on adjoining Piazza Mercantile and Piazza del Ferrarese, where the old Roman road is exposed.
The imposing 12th-century Norman-Swabian Castle guards the west of the historic centre, and the simple Cathedral of San Sabino is from the same period. Equally understated is the Basilica of St Nicholas, housing relics of the saint. Pope John Paul II once prayed there, which may have given rise to Bari Airport’s name: Karol Wojtyła Airport.
Corso Vittorio Emanuele II is the meeting point of the old town and the Murat district, built under orders of Napoleon’s brother-in-law. Facing each other across this street are the colourful façades of the municipal office and Piccinni Theatre, though most prestigious is the Petruzzelli Theatre opera house.
Booking.com’s Bari accommodation includes luxury hotels by the Fiera del Levante, cheap city centre apartments, and B&Bs near the train station. For families, the slides and swimming pools of Bari Acquapark make a great day out.

The cultural and historical stuff can be seen in 1 day and it's time to move to Polignano a Mare, where all the boat related stuff happens. Restaurants are generally expensive and the staff is smug. Bari is a lovely city.
Bari is a lovely city. We loved the new and old town and managed to see most of it in two days. It is a noisy stay in the old town so make sure you have a place that is quiet. Bari is something of a Cinderella of Italian cities,perhaps lacking the tourist profile of say Naples or Bologna. It is a great city of wide tree-lined boulevards,picturesque promenade and cosmopolitan feel. There are lots of good places to eat at modest prices - especially in the outer areas where the hotels like the Nikolaus and Hi are located - sorry I don't know the neighbourhood names.In contrast to say Rome or Milan,there are plenty of green spaces/parks perfect for people watching or just chilling.It also feels very safe,even in the crowded old town at night.Super airport too close to the city - 20mins cab ride. Weather ? Fantastic. Nice city, not expensive, good restaurants, beautiful small art market in city center. Nice Corsos and streets. Charming old town. People are very nice and warm. We have been to Bari several times.
We have been to Bari several times. It is a great city - the old town is beautiful with its small streets and it is amazing to walk around there. The fresh fruit shops are great and the most wonderful - in terms of food - is Santa Rita - for the best focacchia in Italy! St. Nicholas Basilica is wonderful and peaceful and also a stroll along the seaside is fantastic with a sun setting on the day. We have made some local friends and went for a drink - wonderful people! The image from the past, that Bari is a dirty and even dangerous city (like Naples) is no longer true.
