Important Port of Saintly Significance
The Apulian capital Bari has been known for its port since Roman times. Nowadays there are 2 harbours: cruise ships and ferries to Greece and Croatia depart from the new port, while the old port shelters fishing vessels.
Between them is a seafront road bordering the real attraction – the old town. Narrow, cobbled streets lead under arches to hidden piazzas with pavement cafes. Many are on adjoining Piazza Mercantile and Piazza del Ferrarese, where the old Roman road is exposed.
The imposing 12th-century Norman-Swabian Castle guards the west of the historic centre, and the simple Cathedral of San Sabino is from the same period. Equally understated is the Basilica of St Nicholas, housing relics of the saint. Pope John Paul II once prayed there, which may have given rise to Bari Airport’s name: Karol Wojtyła Airport.
Corso Vittorio Emanuele II is the meeting point of the old town and the Murat district, built under orders of Napoleon’s brother-in-law. Facing each other across this street are the colourful façades of the municipal office and Piccinni Theatre, though most prestigious is the Petruzzelli Theatre opera house.
Booking.com’s Bari accommodation includes luxury hotels by the Fiera del Levante, cheap city centre apartments, and B&Bs near the train station. For families, the slides and swimming pools of Bari Acquapark make a great day out.

Bari is such a beautiful city. It is really worth going, especially in September when the weather is similar to summer and there aren’t so many tourists. You really must go to Alberobello, Monopoli and Polignano a Mare. There are plenty of opportunities whether you want a sightseeing holiday or a sunbathing holiday. The location of the hotel was close to the highway for daily trips to other areas. It is a little isolated with not much to do around and a drive to Bari is challenging with the traffic. Parking is available underground for a daily fee. Buffet breakfast was quite good with a variety. Supplies for the room was limited and we therefore had to ask for items that were missing. Bari was our home-base, we could have spent more time exploring but our main aim was to use it as a comfortable base to start and end our day tripping. The old part of town was lovely and the people were very friendly. As a base it is wonderful, pretty much 60-75 minutes from everywhere we wanted to go! We visited Matera, Alberobello, Osuni and Martina Franca from Bari. The Basilica Pontificia San Nicola was very different and absolutely beautiful.Guest review byAnonymous - 10.0

The old town is impressive, with charming narrow streets and historic architecture, while the new part of the city is modern and bustling, full of shops. The seafront is absolutely enchanting. Railway station 15 minutes walk. Very nice breakfast. If you have early flight you can get breakfast box for take away, just ask at the reception one day before. Taxi to the airport 28 eur. Supermarket acros the street. Restaurants few minutes walk. To the beach Pane and pomodoro goes bus, bus station minutes walk. Staff are very kind and helpful. Stylish, beautiful room and old, but fully renovated house with elevator. Comfortable, clean apartment with balcony, met our expectations to the maximum.
