FAQs about hotels in Bergamo

A Bastion of Old World Charm

The arrival point of low-cost airlines with cheap flights to Milan, beautiful Bergamo is a tourist destination in its own right. In the foothills of the Alps, the city is spread over 2 levels. The main sights are in the upper level, or Città Alta, where sloping, cobbled streets open into pretty squares.

One such square is Piazza Vecchia with its sidewalk cafés, beautiful library and elegant Palazzo della Ragione. Through its arches is the Cappella Colleoni, an impressive chapel with an ornately sculpted façade and even more ornate interior. The nextdoor Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore has awe-inspiring frescoes.

Surrounding streets contain several Bergamo old town hotels and B&Bs, while surrounding the whole upper city are 17th-century Venetian walls. There are still remains of the Rocca, the castle that guarded them, and there is also a castle in San Vigilio, a hilltop village reached by a cable car.

A cable car also descends to the modern town, Città Bassa. Nearby is the Accademia Carrara, a fine art gallery, across from the GAMEC modern art museum. The Serie A club Atalanta FC plays in a stadium to the northeast, while southwest is the train station where buses to Orio al Serio Airport depart.

Booking.com has several Bergamo hotels near the airport and the neighboring Orio Center shopping complex.

Bergamo was an absolute gem at least in the ‘old part’ where I stayedat Hotel le Funi. Easy access from Bergamo airport by bus to Colle Aperto then short walk through Porta Sant’Alessandro uphill along cobbled street to hotel. Impressive basilica, cathedral and other churches. Beautiful piazzas and magnificent views. Many excellent and varied restaurants - I would recommend the tagliatelle with porcini mushrooms at Trattoria Dai Gustos. Beware if you just want to sit and enjoy a glass of wine it will cost approx 7-10 euros per glass although they do give you an aperitivo of olives/nuts for free

Bergamo offers a beautiful historic location (Alta Città), a fine art collection (Accademia Carrara) & a variety of cafés & restaurants at various price points The city is clean & accessible, with lots of space for pedestrian tourists Like lots of Italian cities, taxis are as rare as hen’s teeth, so need to be prepared for steep walks!

We stayed at the very bottom of the old town past the center approx 10 minutes from the airport. We eat in the old town in the square were there are a few restaurants and then there are other restaurants down little side streets. The food was excellent and we had a set menu including espresso coffee and service charge for 28 euros each. The old town is a good 30 - 40 minutes walk depending on how fast you walk and where you stay.

Bergamo is a charming city that offers a delightful mix of history, culture, and scenic beauty. The city is divided into two main parts: the historic Città Alta (Upper Town) and the modern Città Bassa (Lower Town). The Città Alta, with its cobblestone streets, medieval architecture, and stunning views, is a must-visit. The ancient Venetian walls surrounding the old town are a UNESCO World Heritage site and provide a fascinating glimpse into the city's past.

The old town at top of the hill - quite spectacular.

The old town at top of the hill - quite spectacular. The religious buildings - basilica/ churches./cathedral interiors were remarkable. Some of the best I have ever seen. Plenty of restaurants and food outlets. Easy to move around Bergamo on foot although easy to lose your bearings in some of the narrow streets! Probably one or two days enough to see the various sites.

Lovely town - both the Old town and the downtown.

Lovely town - both the Old town and the downtown. Perfect mixture of history and culture with modern day entertainment. Lots of shops, bars, restaurants... everything. We had dinner at Barretto di S.Vigilio restaurant at the San Vigilio funicular station - it was a lovely place but you need reservation in advance. And although it's Michelin star rated, prices were very decent (~20 euro per dish). There are buses and of course the funicular but it's really nice to just walk around.

This stay must be one of the best ever. The room was clean, smelled lovely, chilly in the HOT summer. The views were as if we were in a movie. It was surreal sometimes to just stand in that terrace alone and look over the whole city. The Palazzo had great architectural features to admire. The host made us feel like we were a part of the family. Perfectly located in the center of Citta Alta, minutes from the funicular, with a direct airport bus right below. I will get back to Bergamo just to stay here again! Thank you G.

We had an extraordinary pleasant stay for a weekend. The staff was very nice and the view from the breakfast area was incredible! (breakfast was perfect too). The room was big, clean and comfortable. The hotel has its own very fine restaurant and there are another restaurant and a pizzeria 2 minutes away. The Funicolare is just around the corner and is easy access to Citta Alta (cute old town of Bergamo). Hope to return one day.
