On Sicily’s eastern coast, at the foot of Mount Etna, Catania is the island’s second largest city. This charming destination features unique Sicilian Baroque architecture, large squares, avenues and a very important port.
On the northern side of the Cathedral Square, the historical Palazzo degli Elefanti houses the Town Hall of Catania. Dedicated to Saint Agata and built over the Roman Baths of Achilles, the Duomo has an impressive facade that is one of Gia Battista Vaccarini’s masterpieces. The cathedral’s dome dates to 1802, while in the vaulted interior is the grave of the well-known composer Vincenzo Bellini.
Facing the Ionian Sea, this beautiful seaside place is one the hottest Italian cities during the summer. Mount Etna is an active volcano and a nice place for skiing in winter or a trip to the solidified rivers of lava during the rest of the year.

Loved the city, especially nice staying somewhere away from the tourist centre, but still close enough to walk to places.( 5min walk to Via etna) Especially enjoyed the Catania football match vs Monopoli. In particular the old Benedictine Monastery, now part of the University of Catania is excellent, make sure you do the guided tour1.5hrs, the guide was fabulous. The historic centre is beautiful.
The historic centre is beautiful. But, step outside the tourist area and the city is filthy and stinks. The historic centre is just a few small city blocks with a central piazza, after that, the city is in disrepair, the buildings, even centuries old ones, are vandalised with graffiti. There are many derelict buildings and the pavements are a minefield of dog mess and stink of urine. We felt that 3 nights was two nights too many. it was most that the hotel was in the great area of CATANIA shopping CENTER . Also the hotel was an excellent in spending a few days. best of the staff ,the breakfast was fantastic with the view on the 7th floor looking at mount Etna. On arriving the staff receptionists were very help full , Mr PIERPAOLO LAURETTA THE manager greeted me . which it is not normal that the managers welcomes you . Thank you Mr Lauretta.
