Loved the city, especially nice staying somewhere away from the tourist centre, but still close enough to walk to places.( 5min walk to Via etna) Especially enjoyed the Catania football match vs Monopoli. In particular the old Benedictine Monastery, now part of the University of Catania is excellent, make sure you do the guided tour1.5hrs, the guide was fabulous. The historic centre is beautiful.
The historic centre is beautiful. But, step outside the tourist area and the city is filthy and stinks. The historic centre is just a few small city blocks with a central piazza, after that, the city is in disrepair, the buildings, even centuries old ones, are vandalised with graffiti. There are many derelict buildings and the pavements are a minefield of dog mess and stink of urine. We felt that 3 nights was two nights too many. it was most that the hotel was in the great area of CATANIA shopping CENTER . Also the hotel was an excellent in spending a few days. best of the staff ,the breakfast was fantastic with the view on the 7th floor looking at mount Etna. On arriving the staff receptionists were very help full , Mr PIERPAOLO LAURETTA THE manager greeted me . which it is not normal that the managers welcomes you . Thank you Mr Lauretta. Like many other places in Sicily Catania is an enigma! It has lots of history, great buildings, squares and pocket gardens - all worth a visit. The botanic garden is a delight! Plenty of shops and of course places to eat. The enigma is that the charm is often lost in the ruggedness of the place! Nevertheless, amongst the traffic and busyness of the city, charm can be found and thus it can be said Catania is a really fascinating place. We enjoyed Catania in the morning (coffee and granita) but the best time is after 9pm when the place is buzzing with people out having meals.Guest review byAnonymous
