In particular the old Benedictine Monastery, now part of the University of Catania is excellent, make sure you do the guided tour1.5hrs, the guide was fabulous. The historic centre is beautiful.
The historic centre is beautiful. But, step outside the tourist area and the city is filthy and stinks. The historic centre is just a few small city blocks with a central piazza, after that, the city is in disrepair, the buildings, even centuries old ones, are vandalised with graffiti. There are many derelict buildings and the pavements are a minefield of dog mess and stink of urine. We felt that 3 nights was two nights too many. Also the hotel was an excellent in spending a few days. best of the staff ,the breakfast was fantastic with the view on the 7th floor looking at mount Etna.
