FAQs about hotels in Ferrara

A Renaissance Rival to Florence

Ferrara was a haven for the arts during the Renaissance and much of this is still evident today. The powerful Este family held court in the multi-turreted Estense Castle, protected by a moat and drawbridge, and they were illustrious patrons of artists and authors.

Bellini, Piero della Francesca and Titian all perfected their strokes here, and the university houses parts of Ludovico Ariosto’s original manuscript of his epic poem – Orlando Furioso – containing allegorical references to his sponsors. The family is also depicted in Palazzo Schifanoia’s detailed fresoces, and the Palazzo dei Diamanti gallery displays works commissioned from the School of Ferrara.

Some Este tombs are in Corpus Domini Monastery and another is in the ornate cathedral whose three-gabled façade overlooks the crenellated town hall. Both line Piazza di Trento e Trieste, the main square where locals come to socialise. Another popular square is green Piazza Ariostea.

The Este strengthened their position through marriage alliances with the influential Borgia, Medici and Gonzaga families, but they didn’t have it all their own way. Ferrara’s well-preserved city walls were built for defence, and ardent opponent of the Renaissance, Savonarola, was born in this UNESCO World Heritage city.

Surrounding cobbled streets house many luxury Ferrara hotels, cheap apartments and B&Bs near the train station, available on Booking.com.

We would like to go back again!

We would like to go back again! Ferrara definitely has a lot to offer(historical sights, parks, restaurants, pubs...). It is well connected and a short distance from other cities (Bologna, Ravenna...)

The old centre is quite small and easy to navigate.

The old centre is quite small and easy to navigate. Most building are build in 14th century, with some later renovations/additions, and really beautiful with their brick walls. I really enjoyed my visit of Castello Estense (go up the Lion Tower for beautiful view of the city!) and Schifanoia Palace.

The castle was impressive and well worth the entrance fee.

The castle was impressive and well worth the entrance fee. We should have remembered the idiosyncratic opening hours of historic sites/churches and would have done more. But we will return- plenty more to see. A charming local told us about the oldest bar in Italy and then returned to mention the location of the grave of Lucretzia Borja.

We visited all museums and the castle of the city that you can not really skip. We also visited Ravenna (amazing city too) and another beautiful city Padova. All by train easy accessible . I strongly recommend to taste someone Capellazzi di zucca (pumpkin hats). We ate tasty food al Brindisi (one of the oldest taverns in the world! We get there accidentally! Also at La Racchetta very good option for food. For coffee and pastries at Chocolat! For ice cream at Gelateria Romana. I believe what ever your choice will be for food, wine, ice cream, aperol, coffee and more Ferrara will not disappoint you

Me and my family (wife and daughter of 12) visited Ferrara...

Me and my family (wife and daughter of 12) visited Ferrara as a stopover on our journey from Slovakia to Italy's west coast during our summer vacation. On the way back we visited the Bologna, so I can compare both cities already. Ferrara is like a hidden gem, especially with the Bologna nearby it is in Bologna's shade, but Ferrara offers something that other cities don't - that is the size and the possibility to ride a bike almost everywhere without being afraid of cars (there were some, but not that many as in the Bologna). Therefore renting a bike is highly recommended. It's also less touristy than Bologna and more calm. We had only 1 full day and something more for Ferrara and it was quite enough, however it's so cute with all it's streets and corners and little trattorias that I would love to come back again and explore more. The restaurants/trattorias were not so expensive and the food was mostly delicious, also many cafes and my favorite gelato's as well. Next time, or in the colder months I can imagine to visit also some museums/castles from inside as well. Ferrara impressed us a lot and next time would prefer to stay in Ferrara rather than in Bologna, because it truly deserves it.

Lots of things to see if you like arts and history. Great local food and great restaurants choice. Perfect place also to visit other cities in the surroundings (an hour by car) like Padua, Ravenna and the Po delta.

Very strong wi-fi. The room was excellent and they are offering free water, still and sparkling, every day. Also in the room there are coffee and tea. The bathroom huge and well lightened. The breakfast rich and delicious. The bar and breakfast room is the same place with a panoramic view of the Cathedral of Ferrara. Have an Aperol is worthy. The place of the hotel is in the center and someone can walk to every place of interest. The personel very polite and helpful. Thank you for all. You made Ferrara unforgettable.

Really nice, cozy cottage from 15 minutes away from Ferrara. Silvia and Marco are really kind hosts, helping with everything and serving a really tasty and delicious breakfast every day. The pool and the pool area was great you can stay a whole day there. This was our second time to stay there because a lot of areas of Italy could be visited from this location by car in a 1-2 hours circle. Traffic is very well organized so you can reach the whole middle Italy very easily.

We stayed one night at Hotel Touring in Ferrara and had a great experience. The hotel is located right in the city center, which made it perfect for exploring the town on foot. The beds and pillows were incredibly comfortable, and the bathroom was spacious and very clean – everything was truly a 10! The staff was exceptionally kind and welcoming, making us feel right at home. Breakfast was plentiful and varied, with something for everyone to enjoy.

This is a great, little hotel and has a genuine family-run feeling. The staff were friendly and welcoming, the location perfect in a quiet spot on the very edge of the centre and the breakfast offered plenty of choice. I would happily return if in Ferrara again.
