Gateway to the 'Cinque Terre'
La Spezia is one of those typical cities of the Liguria Region where colourful houses cover hills and cliffs, providing panoramic views over the sea. Thousands of years of history and a heart open towards the sea have shaped the character of this town surrounded by the 'Cinque Terre'.
Located on the coast of the namesake gulf, its proximity to Genoa has greatly influenced its development and culture. Take a walk uphill from the harbour, and admire the display of architectonic styles in the Old Town. Some of the best hotels in La Spezia are located here, while elegant guesthouses and villas with gulf views can be found in the highest areas.
Must-see sites in the city are the 13th-century Church of Our Lady of the Assumption and St George’s Castle. The ‘Sea Festival’ is organized every summer, and its highlight is the rowing competition ‘Palio del Golfo’, a race between the 13 villages of the gulf. Departing from the port of La Spezia, boats can take you to the enchanted ‘Cinque Terre’.

We used La Spezia as a place to visit Cinque Terre region. We were somewhat disappointed in Cinque Terre. It is overcrowded and somewhat dilapidated. The buildings could be refreshed with a coat of paint. The best way to see the region is to take the train to Vernazza, then take a 2-hour boat trip to view the five villages. La Spezia is a great town-lots of great shops, restaurants and bars for aperitivo. Very walkable and people very friendly. Perfect jumping point for access to Cinque Terre. Actually we visited Cinque Terre so that we didn't have much time to enjoy La Spezia and Porto Venere. You can find mercato, supermarkets, parks, little train for sightseeing and so on. It is more practical to stay in La Spezia especially if you have luggages to drag along - in CInque Terre, stairs, narrow steps and steep slopes are really challenging to do with baggage. There are wider range of options of food in La Spezia, and considerably cheaper than the ones in Cinque Terre. You need to arrive at least 4 days so that in one day you can explore and go through the whole Spezia. And then 3 days, to driving around all 5 Italian beautiful coastal villages Cincve TerreIn every village you will definitely come across some competitions, concerts or performances. You will be able to have lunch in some restaurant where there are many dishes with seafood. And be sure to try the local excellent draft beer. Also be sure to go on walks between the villages, they are usually no longer than 2.5 kilometers, but this is Above the cliff above the sea.
