The location was perfect because it was accessible by taxi. JeanLuc (spelling) was so VERY helpful in many ways. Also---since I am a WWII history buff it was very intriguing to discover that Benito Mussolini (Il Duce) stayed in this building when it was a private home AND he spoke from the balcony that was adjacent to one of rooms.

Matera was fantastic, it exceeded all our expectations.
Matera was fantastic, it exceeded all our expectations. The main town was clean, modern, very walkable and a nice mixture of shops and restaurants. The old town was very accessible and just amazing to walk through and discover. Lovely little shops, restaurants and bars. The views were simply exceptional and especially lit up at night. We also loved the historical elements of the city. Definitely somewhere to stay more than one night.

Matera is made for people ready to walk and hike around the city. We loved that about it but for anyone physically challenged, I could see mobility being an issue. It was a city unlike any I have seen before and you would pass a cave dwelling and then a beautiful restaurant that has transformed that cave dwelling into the coolest eatery. It was a lovely city with so much history, incredible churches, great shopping, and wonderful restaurants.

Matera is the 3rd oldest city in the world and was wonderful to visit and to see in person this beautiful city literally hanging off the cliffs, the caves and underground cisterns - the way people lived there is fascinating !
A walking tour of the city and some caves is a must !
Enjoyed dining on the top terrace at La Finestra Sui Sassi most delicious meal with a view of the old city
We walked everywhere.

Matera is as beautiful as it is fascinating.
Matera is as beautiful as it is fascinating. The fact that 15,000 people were living in cave homes until the 1950s is unbelievable. There is a great day hike you can do down through the deep gorge and up the other side to see more caves; the view of Matera from there is fantastic. If you are going to Matera in the summer, do this hike as early as you can, as it gets very hot. There are many great restaurants--including a really good sushi place, Sushi Stone. The central plazas are huge and cool. We loved Matera and consider it one of the best places we went in Italy.

The area was amazing.
The area was amazing. So glad we stayed the night so we could see the city at nighttime. I wish we would have signed up for a tour, as that would have been helpful in understanding the history of the area. I would recommend 2 nights in Matera so you have enough time to explore the city as well as the caves.

It is one of the most fascinating destination you can visit for a day or two. The view from the top is beautiful from morning to night. You will end up doing many steps and during mid summer can be fairly challenging but it is better than when it rains and roads get extremely wet. My personal favourite spot of the view was from Convent of Saint Agostino where you can see the floating city and the road surrounding.
Small hotel, practically situated on the fringe of Sassi Caveoso and therefore easy to park the car. Our room was quite spacious. Breakfast is served on a nicely situated terrace with stunning view of the town. Great for aperitif in the evening. For dinner, I heartily recommend Soul Kitchen, exceptional Ribeye (Podolica) and Pannacotta with orange infused olive oil. Make sure you take a guided walking tour to really get to know Matera.
This is a really special place to stay. Yes it does not have all mod cons, but that is the point. If you are looking for a 5 star hotel service, go somewhere else. If you are looking for a great experience and night in one of the old Matera caves, look no further. Great location in fascinating Matera. Breakfast was a magnificent spread. Would heartily recommend this hotel.
The hotel is charming and clean, the room inside a renovated cave, very beautiful. Wonderful staff who tried in every to give a good feeling, the best breakfast we ate in Italy ... but the hotel is definitely not suitable for people with knee problems ... we counted 78 steps to go up and down the hotel. It definitely needs to be written, so people know what awaits them.
The apartment is a very new renovation in a part of town that is a very short walk to the part of Matera that you will be exploring. The owner gave us many recommendations and a thorough briefing on arrival. The facilities of the apartment are top notch. Better than a high end hotel.
The location is perfect. The property is amazing! Looked like a boutique hotel. The staff- Giuseppe was very helpful. Went above and beyond to make my stay memorable. The comfort of a luxury hotel in a cave room.
