I had no high expectations before arriving. I saw pictures with the city, it looked fine. But after arriving I was enchanted. The city is amaaaaaazing. Especially the Sassi of matera, where is the old town. It is very nice to walk in and around the old town, and it's worth to go to the other side of the valley to the belvedere point to have a view on Matera from there :D
When, I was there in 03-05 May 2019, there were throngs of crowds. People chanted in the streets until 0200 am. I loved the city, but the crowds, were a little too much for me. Maybe, I was there during May Day, celebration? But, I would still do it again
Matera is like nothing I have seen before- it represents a way of like that was both harsh but magnificently communal. Getting around to see both Sassi was fairly easy if you have no mobility problems- say some folks with walking sticks which might be helpful. The exhibits of like in the past must be seen...and then one can eat! Go to the Grand Cafe for caffe and local pastries.
Matera was jaw-droppingly awesome! Seeing the caves set in the hill for the first time left us speechless. We loved walking around the town, learning about the history. And our hotel couldn’t have been lovelier.
It is an amazing city, and I highly recommend going there!!! We ate at Morgan and it was wonderful, great service and food was so tasty! The town is one of the oldest in the world We went to Casa Grotta--the cave dwelling so interesting. Stayed at the Hotel Casino Ridola which was very nice, easy access for our car. A bit of a walk downhill and back up, but well worth it. We did it 3 times and my husband is 80 so if in any kind of shape very doable.
This is one of the most unusual places with extraordinary beauty. We found some great places to eat in the back streets. The old city is wonderful. The caves are well worth the trip. Be prepared to climb the streets and forget bringing a car.

The room was very new, spacious and clean. It had more of a hotel feel than many of the agriturismi that we’ve stayed at in Italy, but given its size and close interaction with the family that owned it, it was perfect. It is situated about ten minutes from Matera. I’m so glad that we chose this place as it allowed us to easily get to various destinations. The breakfasts were awesome and everyone was very kind and helpful. They were able to set us up last minute with a great tour guide to visit the Sassi. We really enjoyed our stay!

To sleep in a real cave in Matera was an amazing experience. To sleep in a cave with an incredible view, that is absolutely unique. The location couldnt be better. On the top of the hill, next to Piazza Vittorio Veneto, very central to explore the old city, but also ideally located to park your car in a free parking spot. And Andrea is a great, friendly and helpful host. The bed and pillows were very comfortable and the appartmen is very quite and cozy.

The hotel is one of the most unique places I have ever stayed right in the heart of the Matera Sassi (old town). It is a fabulous hotel built into a cave and has a big bedroom and open shower so more of a romantic stay and very comfortable! The European breakfast selection was great with a lot of charcuterie & cheese. The staff were very helpful in organising a taxi for me to visit Alberobello for a day.
