Been to many places...Matera is one of best because the sassi is unique.
Be prepared to walk/hike and climb up and down multiple steps and you will be rewarded with stunning views.
Check out the 5 belvederes to see panoramic views of the sassi, be prepared to pay €4-5 to enter rupestrian churches and hike the way up to the Murgia Materana or drive to the parking lot on top if walking the steep and tricky stairs is a challenge for you.

Everyone should visit Matera if they get the opportunity, it's fantastic!
The Sassi's are unique, imagine the same families living in the same house for 8000 years, that's Matera.
Some of the caves have been repurposed for tourism but the place still has a magical feel

History and natural beauty of the place was amazing.
History and natural beauty of the place was amazing. Stumbling across the Kapunto Restaurant was a big bonus as that added another cultural dimension to our visit. We wish we had booked for a longer visit.
We love to walk. So, exploring the old part of town and the area of our
residence, was fun and fascinating - even in the rain!!
We found all of the servers and restaurant staff members, that we met, to be friendly and welcoming.

A Tour with guide can be good, but probably just as valuable to read up about Matera's Sassi (cave house areas) before you go and do your own tour... our guide says no locals live in the sassi partly cos its a house in a cave, so damp, and partly its expensive to renovate a cave house sufficiently to be able to live there... so only the tourists "live" in the sassi houses.
We did our own "tour" of Parco Murgia. Great walk, even though most of the abandoned cave/houses now seem to be tourist urinals, and the cave churches fenced off. But good walk down to Gravina river and great view of Matera's sassi.

Matera is an ancient city that has been cleaned up and has incredible views of the Sassi. It's a place you should spend a couple of days to really get the feel of the place. It's absolutely beautiful when you first start to see the lights come on in the evening. The views from the morning can leave you speechless. It's a special place with a lot of history about the people who once lived there.

The location is absolutely amazing, in the heart of old Matera, with a beautiful view on the old city and cathedral. The room is very unique, adopted former caves but very comfortable and nicely furnitured.
The staff is very responsive and helpful.
We loved breakfasts, very fresh and local food. I can say, the best breakfasts that we have experienced in Italy.
We recommend to stay there and feel the unique atmosphere and climate of Matera. We will come back!
Very nice room, spacious and very clean! Everything in top shape inside the room and Hotel. Valeria is a great host with passion for what she does. She’s very helpful and has great suggestions for food, drinks and sightseeing! Just ask her. Breakfast was super fresh everyday and served directly on a nice terrace next to the Hotel. We enjoyed our stay very much and will definitely book here again if we come back to Matera!! Thanks for the great stay!
Only four rooms but an outstanding ‘caveman’ dwelling! Beautifully restored/developed blending the original cave with modern amenities. Perfect location for exploring Matera. If driving highly recommend the park and shuttle service that avoids the need to park in the city and cart luggage. Shuttle drops you yards from the hotel. Excellent breakfast and great hosts.
We were warmly welcomed at the reception, the hotel is clean and well located, close to the old part of Matera. The roof-top terrace is a nice place to relax. Around the hotel you can find parking options in the street for free. All in all a good place for a stay in Matera.
