Matera is beautiful, its must visit. But luckily I visited on the low season, so it wasn't crowded, which I liked. It's better than Ostini, as the city has a character and I stayed in a Sassi, which was great, also shopping was good, felt cheaper than other cities. Matera is such a unique Italian place.
Matera is such a unique Italian place. Every turn of a corner showed another viewpoint. Your eyes will be transfixed to the Bell tower. I ventured to the other side of the ravine. Across the rope bridge and up the other side. To see Matera from here is a bonus. There are caves on this side. I did partake in a ‘Get Your Guide’ activity to learn about the history of Matera, this was very informative and worthwhile if you have time to squeeze it into your duration here. Matera is a must visit if you’re in the vicinity for sheer beauty and fascinating history. A guided walking tour is very valuable to understand the history and I also highly recommend the Casa Noha museum for the history video - very well done and informative. Don’t miss an opportunity to find a spot to view the whole town at dusk and watch the colours change and lights come on. We did the hike across the gorge over the bridge. Very beautiful and historic town with a very unique history and architecture. Great place to spend max 24hours. Time is spent just walking up and down the small streets and looking at historic churches and buildings. Wouldn’t recommend anywhere specifically to eat - seems to be full of lots of lovely little trattorias. HOWEVER, the ones with good reviews were all fully booked for dinner, so I would recommend calling or emailing ahead. Room 16 offers breathtaking panoramic views over the entire Sassi, while room 7 provides an authentic cave experience carved directly into the ancient rock. Both rooms feature stunning vaulted stone ceilings and impeccable design that seamlessly blends historical authenticity with modern luxury. The Spa: Phenomenal! The wellness center with free spa access for all guests is incredible - what a fantastic inclusion! The facilities are world-class and having complimentary access to the spa amenities makes this exceptional value. We also booked a massage, which was absolutely wonderful. The Location: Perfect positioning in the UNESCO World Heritage Sassi district. You're literally staying within history itself, surrounded by millennial caves and ancient stone architecture.
